Project: Covered canisters

Every year as the holidays approach, our relatives start sending us all sorts of edible delights in big metal tins. We gobble up the treats, but the tacky tins are a little harder to swallow. Giving them a wallpaper makeover makes them as pretty to look at as they are handy to have around.

Materials
Cookie tin
Wallpaper scraps
1 yard of ½"-wide grosgrain ribbon

Tools
Measuring tape
Ruler
Pencil
Scissors
X-Acto blade
Spray adhesive
Tacky glue

How-to
1 Measure the height and circumference of the cookie tin, adding 1/2" to the circumference for overlap.

2 Transfer the measurements to the wallpaper and cut out your pieces with scissors or an X-Acto blade.

3 Place the lid top-side down on your paper and trace around it. Cut out the circle with scissors.

4 Apply an even layer of spray adhesive to the back side of your paper and carefully wrap it around the tin, smoothing down the paper as you go. Apply adhesive to the circle and press it onto the lids.

5 Measure the circumference of the lids and cut a piece of ribbon to length, adding 1" for overlap.

6 Apply tacky glue to the ribbon and wrap it around the edge of the lid. For a clean look, fold the raw edge of the ribbon under 1/2", dab it with glue, and press down.
