Interior: Modern Christmas flair

With its twinkling lights and boughs of greenery, the Victorian rowhouse of Sarah Ferguson sparkles with the spirit of the holidays. Holiday wreaths dance on doors, garlands dangle along the staircase and a plethora of pine branches dress up the mantel in emerald tones. What can’t be seen in the photos of this house, though, are the aromas of mince pies baking in the oven, the sounds of holiday carols drifting through the speakers and Sarah’s rapturous praise of designers Erin Feasby and Cindy Bleeks for pulling it all together.

Sarah Ferguson’s home delivers an evergreen scented welcome, thanks to the fresh wreath on the front door. Sarah can drop her keys on the antique wall-mounted console. Ornate and dramatic, it makes a fun counterpoint to the bold striped wallpaper that accentuates the home’s towering ceilings. modernmerry-holidaydecorscheme-7.jpg
Holiday decorating scheme

Sarah adores the holidays, which she shares with her sister each year. The tree is visible from the holiday entryway and from the living room. Sapphire-hued ribbon and ruby accents pull in the colours of the rest of the home’s holiday decorating scheme. modernmerry-livingroom2.jpg
The living room

Luxurious velvet in deep charcoal serves as the backdrop for the sofa’s vibrant magenta and pink throw pillows. Across the living room, cut velvet damask and stripes enliven two armchairs that both celebrate and wink at tradition. Warm white walls and large-scale modern light fixtures soften the happy palette. Fresh pine and fir boughs across the mantel and a seasonal bouquet on the coffee table declare that the holidays are here. modernmerry-livingroomaccents3.jpg
Living room accents

Cut velvet damask and cheeky stripes on the living room chairs elevate the furniture to conversation pieces. Behind, on the dining room wall, raspberry-hued large-scale wallpaper lends drama and a touch of glamour and links the two spaces. Shelves and walls feature Sarah’s sister’s photography, treasured books and favourite silver and gold accents. modernmerry-stairsgarland4.jpg
Stairs garland

“Rather than hang the garlands on the banister, which would have hidden the pretty spindles, we draped them on the otherwise plain wall below,” says designer Erin Feasby of Feasby & Bleeks Design. modernmerry-Addingdetails5.jpg
Adding small details

For tradition with a twist, Erin selected decor accessories in vibrant jewel tones. “You don’t need to start from scratch with decorations – just add to what you have. The gorgeous ribbon we used on the mantel was an inexpensive addition that played to the living room’s existing palette. It’s a cheap way to change up the colour every year.” modernmerry-placesettings6.jpg
Dining room place settings

The metallics, raspberry reds and sparkling crystal of the dining room’s place settings denote a merry Christmas. modernmerry-xmastree-last.jpg
Christmas tree

Adorned in wide satin ribbon, this tall, narrow Christmas tree looks twice its size thanks to the mirror propped behind. Pale modern upholstered chairs soften the small dining room and make it even more inviting.
