The barren rocky shores of Rose Island rise from the waters of Georgian Bay, Ont., like the backs of whales. And rugged conifers stand firm amid the area’s wild wind and weather. It was here, about three years ago, that Torontonians Jacqueline and Gavan Howe purchased a lot to build a getaway to share with their three grown children, extended family and friends. Long before there was a floor plan or a building permit, there were visions of cooking with loved ones. “The
kitchen may be the heart of a home, but it’s definitely the soul of a cottage,” says Jacqueline.
Kitchen island
The kitchen island is great for food prep but it’s also a place for wine sipping and cereal slurping, depending on the time of day and who’s visiting.
Kitchen accessories
1 An oversized pendant light is suspended over the kitchen island. Its black finish is a dramatic contrast to the array of wood tones in the post-and-beam structure.
2 The beams of the home restricted the size of kitchen cabinetry that could be installed, so customized shelves cut from stone found on the property were set on rustic corbels for an open, cottage-friendly look.
3 Collections of pitchers make for a bright and homey accent. Homeowner Jacqueline Howe uses them to show off fresh flowers, or to serve iced drinks all summer long.
4 Dark cabinetry defines the kitchen area. Behind these tall doors sits a stackable washer and dryer.
5 These cupboard doors hide pullout drawers for pots and pans, as well as baking supplies, mostly used by Jacqueline’s daughters who love to bake treats for the family when they visit.
