Bathroom trend 3: Antibacterial tile

If nothing else, 2009 was a year about communicable diseases, namely the H1N1 virus. In 2010, expect to see technological advances in kitchens and bathrooms, such as this brand-new self-disinfecting "antibacterial tile." It won’t kill viruses, but when sunlight or artificial UVA light shines on the tile, the reaction with titanium dioxide kills nasty bacteria found in bathrooms.

Active Clean Air & Antibacterial tile available from Savoia.

I wish to paint our bathroom vanity black. It currently, has a wood finish. What are the steps I should follow in order that the black looks 'rich'?

First, sand down any finish that's on the wood. Spray a primer on the wood, let it dry, then spray the colour you want it to be. Using a spray gives it a nice, even finish.

Where could the White Floating Vanity set be bought? I've looked and looked for this style online everywhere. No luck. This is the one for me.

Trends come and go every ten years or so. There is always a "New Colour", "Must Have" finishes, counters, vanities etc. What I see as a trend is better construction, nicer fixtures, premium tile and the growing acceptance of curbless and level access showers. Our North America population is top heavy with seniors, Baby Boomers and their parents the largest demographic and most likely to splurge on high end bathrooms and luxury pieces. If you have the means and a bad hip or poor knee a curbless shower renovation is a simple decision. With advancements in waterproofing systems builders, designers and tile setters need to be retrained in this wet room approach. With this new surge in level access shower renovations a new trend in leaks and water damage may arise in the DIY market, perhaps not but the science and the materials are out there. Find a skilled builder, tile setter, designer or architect in your city and check their work, their insurance, their WCB, their references and take the process slowly. Building a curbless shower is different for every type of home, with every plumbing package, with wood or steel stud construction, slab on grade or full basement. You need excellent planning, the best waterproofing products, permits, inspections, flood tests and air tests. Look into it - it would be a shame to spend $50,000 on your dream bathroom and 4 years later fall and hurt your hip and not be able to step over even a 5" curb and have to start the process over again. Building these showers and spending now for future needs is in my opinion one of the greenest things you can do. "Build it Green. Build it for life." Regards, John Whipple By Any Design Ltd.
