Buying guide: Throw blankets

By: Jennifer Weatherhead
Is there anything more comforting that snuggling up under a super soft, large throw? We think not. Throws are essential in bedrooms, dens and living rooms – they add comfort, a homey feeling and are also an easy way to add texture, colour and design trends to your home. Not to mention, you can take these warm blankets from room to room (preferably wrapped around you).
1 A piece of Canadiana

It’s always nice to have a touch of Canada in your home, whether that be through local art, Canadian-made furniture or this thick, irresistible afghan-style wool throw with the Hudson Bay’s unmistakable and iconic stripes., $150. throw-blankets-alpaca.jpg
2 An alpaca throw

Anyone who has experience with baby alpaca knows it is possibly one of the warmest and softest fabrics around. This cozy throw is handmade in Peru and comes in vibrant hues to brighten up your space in a flash. An added bonus with alpaca? It pills and pulls less than normal wool, so it will last a lifetime. Crate and Barrel, $210.52. throw-blankets-plaid.jpg
3 Opt for plaid

You can’t go wrong style-wise with anything plaid. This classic print in neutral colours equals a throw that is not only inviting and perfect for wrapping yourself in, but is also one that will stand the test of time. Make it even more personal by adding in a monogram for yourself or for a gift. West Elm, $71.63.

4 Something lighter than wool

With the weather changes in Canada, a cool summer night might call for a lighter throw rather than a thick wool blanket. This soft, ivory throw is perfect for those summer nights when there’s a slight breeze. Light and airy, it provides just the right amount of warmth. Indigo, $65.

5 Get cozy with faux fur

Add luxury to your home with a rich, deep-hued faux fur throw. Sure, you could pick an ivory or grey shade, but we think this caramel colour adds an extra bit of luxury. Perfect for making a den or living room feel more cushy and comfortable. Pottery Barn, $129.28. throw-blankets-sweater-like.jpg
6 Think sweater material

You know your favourite sweater? Your go-to when it’s snowing or raining outside? Translate that into a comforting cable-knit cotton throw in either neutral shades or bright, bold colours. It’s ideal for your reading chair, at the foot of your bed to keep your toes warm, or wrapped around you wherever you go. Horchow, $125.

7 A masculine touch

Add some warmth and coziness to a more masculine room, a bachelor pad or a masculine home office with a merino wool throw in manly colours like red, navy and charcoal grey. Perfect for any casual room. Ethan Allen, $258.40.

8 A little bit country

For a touch of country, this throw will make any room feel casual and welcoming. We’re loving the deep denim colour and the thought of it fading slightly as the years go by. Lightweight and made from soft linen, it will be your best friend at the cottage and through chilly summer nights. Restoration Hardware, $74. throw-blankets-organic.jpg
9 Go organic

For the environmentally friendly home, this cozy and ultra-soft, organic cotton throw will be a welcome addition. Combed 100% organic cotton in a jacquard weave makes for a plush, yet lightweight throw to snuggle under. Pottery Barn, $77.05 – $129.28. throw-blankets-bold-print-3.jpg
10 Go for a bold print

A throw is a great way to add prints to your home. This Moroccan-inspired printed throw is subtle, yet stylish and adds instant interest to your living space. Added bonus? It’s made from recycled yarn, making it a more eco-friendly home decor accessory. Horchow, $195.
