Côté Sud (4338 St-Denis St.; 514-289-9443; cotesud.ca) is a Zen-like 1,600-square-foot space featuring dark chocolate brown teak furniture with an Asian edge -- it's imported from Indonesia and the Philippines -- and crisp white, tightly tailored upholstered pieces for contrast. Design consultations are available, as is custom furniture, at both this location and the flagship store at 4412 St-Laurent Blvd. (514-842-2605).
Spread over three levels and 3,200 square feet, Zone (4246 St-Denis St.; 514-845-3530, 877-845-3532; zonemaison.com) sells an abundance of home accessories, from tableware and pillows to ready-made drapery -- all "modern with a feminine touch," says Guy Pelletier, director of communications. Items from its accessibly priced lighting collection -- from chandeliers to table lamps -- are clean-lined and cute, whimsical or minimalist. The largest Umbra supplier in Quebec, Zone is also the only supplier of France's SCE lighting. An added flourish: "We wrap everything with silver paper and ribbon that changes colours with the seasons," Guy says. Items can be ordered online and shipped internationally. There are two other locations in Montreal, and one each in Quebec City and Ottawa.
Arthur Quentin (3960 St-Denis St.; 514-843-7513, 800-303-7513; arthurquentin.com) has been the grande dame of the St-Denis strip since its establishment some 30 years ago. Each of the three sections -- kitchenware, tableware and home decor -- features treasures like Maintenon dishware in luscious shades of pink, blue and green (and you're not compelled to buy sets, but can pick up individual pieces of any of the dishware), lovely Ponza striped 100-per-cent-linen napkins, and leather photo albums that just scream English country manor. Go in person, visit the website, phone or e-mail and your purchases can be shipped anywhere in the world; there's also a bridal registry and a gift-wrapping service.
Bleu Nuit (3913 St-Denis St.; 514-843-5702, 800-303-7513; bleunuit.ca) is one of our favourite linen shops in Montreal. On our last visit to the airy, high-ceilinged store, we fell in love with items in the hottest new colour -- purple. From the purple-velvet-piped "Malmaison" shams with fuchsia flowers to a smashing striped quilt in purple, red and blue shades, the selection is mouth-watering. If you prefer other palettes, there's every colour you could dream of, as well as classic white linen. Bestsellers include dramatic duvet covers by Sonia Rykiel. A bridal registry, gift wrapping and international shipping round out the store's selection of services.
The perfect setting -- soft green-coloured and brick walls with aged wood floors -- provides the backdrop for the charming Fauchois Fleurs (3933A St-Denis St.; 514-844-4417; fauchoisfleurs.com). Here, along with floral arrangements, you can buy seasonal home decorations, terracotta pots of all shapes and sizes, glazed pots and a variety of statuary.
One of only two outlets of the Paris-based company on this side of the world -- the other is also in Montreal -- the petite but perfect Carré Blanc (3999 St-Denis St.; 514-847-0729, 800-847-0821; carreblanc.com) greets shoppers with linens adorned with whimsical patterns in bright colours -- everything from bedding and towels, table linens and bathrobes to collections for the wee ones, most of which can be monogrammed with your first name. See if you can walk out empty-handed!
