Boutiques in old St. John's and modern mega-malls offer unique finds.

Living Rooms' (The Murray Premises; 709-753-5644; 1-888-753-7666; livingrooms.ca) unlikely location -- The Murray Premises, a fishing warehouse on the waterfront -- only adds to home decor store's unique charm. The largest and first of three St. John's locations (there are small-scale stores/cafes in the Village Mall and Churchill Square), there are two floors filled with everything you need to make a house a home, including gourmet kitchenware, furniture, and crystal stemware. Living Rooms appreciates your patronage so much so that they created the Frequent Buyer Program, whereby when your total purchases reach $500, you'll receive a gift certificate for $50. Save those receipts!

The neat, uncluttered displays and all-white decor at Home on Water Street (168 Water Street; 709-738-8228) allow the downtown store's home accents pieces and kitchenware to speak for themselves. “We wanted people to be able to walk through the store and see everything,” says co-owner Donald Moores. Things to see include Danica dishware, Pillivuyt porcelain and unique kitchen items, such as the bestselling brownie spatula and brushed-steel cake pedestals, plus high-end chocolates for the cook! You'll also find a large selection of European bath and body products, David Fussenegger throws and bathrobes, plus new leather products from Montreal's M0851 company.
