In this sharply dressed Victorian, a single tone of the most talked about colour in town reigns.

One outcome of moving into a new house is finally unloading all the stuff you’ve been hoarding. But relocating isn’t only about getting rid of your belongings – it’s also an ideal time to adopt fresh decor. For Adam Morrison, who works for the Ontario government, and his partner, James Owen, a family doctor, this meant taking on a daring monochromatic palette amped up with glamorous gold when they swapped their subdued loft for a Victorian in Toronto’s Riverdale neighbourhood.

The all grey abode is the work of designers Glen Peloso, Jamie Alexander and
Vanessa Esposito of Peloso Alexander Interiors, who made over the couple’s previous home. Says Adam: “We went from a contemporary loft to this house, which is elegant, luxurious and masculine.”

Charismatic dining area

A casual bar is ready for use in the dining area, where a charming tangled chandelier steals the spotlight. The Tulip-style table and Mid-Century Modern-look chairs have a homey retro quality that works with the dame in the frame.

Contemporary living area

“It recalls an old-fashioned gentleman’s study from a bygone era,” says designer Jamie Alexander of the living room. A pair of blue velvet armchairs with gold-leafed geometric frames lends contemporary weight. “The result is a comfortable and durable space – you can sit with a glass of scotch and a book, and life won’t end if you spill something on the rug,” says homeowner Adam Morrison.

Dazzling golden bedroom

“It’s a modern version of a classic four-poster bed in brushed brass,” says Jamie. An old one would have felt too fussy in the master bedroom, which features shimmery wallpaper.

Oval accent mirrors

A pair of oval mirrors in the master bedroom offers simple adornment, so the focus is on the leaded-glass windows, which are original to the house.
