With the bones of this Kitsilano, B.C., townhouse already working for the homeowner, designer Negar Reihani set to work on fine-tuning the details.

“Ultimately, the goal was to elevate what was already there—refreshing and refining rather than replacing—resulting in a home that feels both cohesive and authentically lived-in,” says Reihani, the founder and principal designer with Space Harmony Interiors in Vancouver.

Originally brought on to only redesign the kitchen and its two adjoining rooms, the designer saw an opportunity to highlight the homeowner’s love for art and eclectic aesthetics.

“It’s a curated mix that reflects the client’s diverse tastes and global sensibilities, making it nearly impossible to define the home by one single style,” she says.

“The kitchen had seen the most wear and tear, and the client was considering a complete renovation,” says Reihani. However, most of the room’s foundational elements were still in good shape.

Reihani replaced the cabinet doors with a warm wood veneer for a more modern look, as well as smart storage solutions, including an integrated recycling station.

“Our refinement approach also involved rethinking the placement of existing furniture,” says Reihani. The large leather lounge chair and Noguchi coffee table by the banquette—both originally located in the upstairs sitting area—add character to the space.

Reihani’s main task for the living room was to create a space that invites comfort. New contemporary furniture complements the existing vibrant art and teal MCM lounger.

This space, as well as the dining room, features colourful art by Vancouver-based artist Carla Tak. “Because her art makes such a strong statement, we kept the surrounding furnishings clean, modern, and quiet,” says Reihani.

Prior to the renovation, the kitchen island served as the sole eating space. Reihani transformed the formerly disconnected family room into a charming dining room with a new oversized rug, live-edge table, and a TV disguised as artwork for when the homeowner hosts hockey-centred dinner parties.

Along with Tak’s art, Reihani added a personal touch to the space: her very own handmade pottery.

Upstairs is one of Reihani’s favourite spaces in the home—"What I like to call the travel planning room,” she says.

The relaxing room features a collection of guidebooks and souvenirs, and a bold design style. Everything from the rug to the cushions to the artwork is playful and patterned.

Striking artwork and colourful notes are repeated in the bedroom. “To balance it, we kept the furnishings and bedding simple and soft, ensuring the space felt serene yet expressive,” says Reihani.
