A California-Cool Kitchen Designed For Ryan Gosling's Mom
A builder-basic kitchen gets treated to a charming coastal makeover fit for a home chef.
This past October, designer Lisa Kooistra put the finishing touches on this exceptional kitchen redesign in the home of Donna Gosling. Donna had been dreaming of upgrading to a chef’s kitchen, one that was serene and stylish. Lisa was up for the challenge, combining a minimalist aesthetic with coastal charm to create an elegant, relaxing space that’s as suited for everyday living as it is for hosting warm family gatherings.
"This project is a testament to the transformative power of design,” says Lisa, who turned the once basic, builder-grade kitchen, typical of Ontario homes, into the serene and sophisticated kitchen of Donna’s dreams. Lisa’s recipe for success was collaborating on the design process, working closely with the home chef and baker to translate her needs and desires into a space that’s both beautiful and functional.
“To meet Donna’s expectations, we incorporated custom cabinetry with generous storage for appliances, cookware and ingredients,” says the principal designer and founder of Lisa Kooistra Designs. “The carefully considered layout and thoughtfully organized space ensure efficient workflow and a clutter-free environment.” Coupled with a calming coastal vibe, it’s a kitchen conducive to relaxing and unwinding.

“A key design element is the thoughtful integration of natural materials such as wood and stone, which brings warmth, depth and texture to the space,” says Lisa. The clean lines, minimalist aesthetic and soft, neutral palette all work together to create a serene ambience. Strategically placed lighting casts a warm glow that accentuates the architectural features while enhancing the inviting feeling.

Beyond having all the features a home chef and baker could dream of, the design captures the “effortless charm of California cool vibes,” says Lisa. The designer carefully considered every detail, from the natural, layered light and neutral palette to the lush indoor plants and hardware, ensuring they all came together to create a space that has a fresh, laid-back coastal feel. Curved details in the island, stools and accent chair, as well as in the open shelves and glass-front cabinet, bring a sense of softness and sophistication. “This project demonstrates the power of design to elevate everyday living,” Lisa says. “By prioritizing Donna’s needs and desires, we have successfully created a kitchen that is not only a functional workspace but also a beautiful and inspiring space to spend time in.”

Working with Donna on the redesign was a joy for the designer. “Donna brought so much warmth and professionalism to the project, making the process seamless and enjoyable from start to finish,” says Lisa. What stood out to her most was Donna’s collaborative spirit and her genuine attention to detail. “She always went above and beyond to make sure our vision came together beautifully,” says the designer. This thoughtful partnership was the perfect recipe for creating a functional, comfortable and refined kitchen that reflects Donna’s warmth and ease. Just what the chef ordered.
