Hidden Storage And Curved Cabinets Abound In This Toronto Kitchen
For the homeowners of this Toronto abode, what started as a jaunt to a kitchen showroom to repair a broken oven quickly turned into a large-scale main-floor reno.
The thing about this home, nestled in the city’s luxe Yorkville neighbourhood, is that it was already beautiful. “Our priority was to refresh the other spaces, notably the kitchen and living room, to bring out that character,” says Justin Kovnjak, a designer with the Yorkville Design Centre.
Welcoming functionality is at the heart of the design, which began in the kitchen and ultimately married into the adjoining living space.
“It was important for us to find throughlines between the two spaces with repeated use of textures and finishes,” says Kovnjak. “Ensuring form was never at the expense of function was at the forefront of our minds.”
The open-concept space now holds cabinets, hidden storage, and sleek, curved features that work hard for the family.

“We wanted something contemporary and timeless that wouldn’t reject the classic style of the home,” says Kovnjak.
The inviting kitchen features an array of seamlessly integrated appliances. A push-to-open Gaggenau refrigerator, open-bar nook, and handleless cabinets are sleek and smooth.
Useful storage is hidden behind elegant panelling, concealing pantry space and cabinetry. Tucked beneath the island is a pop-out bowl that emerges for Bruce the dog with a gentle toe-tap.

The entire space is wrapped in warm creams and beiges, offset by a wash of veined backsplash. Fluted millwork makes a soft appearance along the bottom of the kitchen island, upper cabinetry, and around the curved range hood.
The original design featured a traditional fluted hood, but that style couldn’t withstand the long-lasting catalyzed lacquer finish the team desired. “We ended up going with the thicker rounded corners with routered flutes on the flat edges,” says Kovnjak.

For continuity, the design extends beyond the kitchen into the connected living room—warm hues and fluted millwork are repeated along the TV wall. Black accents lend a clean and contemporary lens to the space.
