Inside This Marble-Filled European-Inspired Home

With its warm, classically contemporary design, this Vancouver, B.C., abode was built for timeless appeal.

A seamless marriage of modern comforts and timeless character was key for the homeowner, says designer Maria DeCotiis. “It was equally important that the home transition gracefully into the next chapter of life, remaining functional and beautiful even once the kids move out.”

Keeping longevity at the forefront, this home is a portrait of traditional craftsmanship and thoughtful architectural details. Marble is a prominent feature. So are ornate plaster mouldings and light herringbone floors. “Together, these elements create a subtle yet distinctly European sensibility while still feeling fresh and contemporary,” says DeCotiis, the founder of Maria DeCotiis Interior Design in Vancouver.

Designed as the home’s focal point, the kitchen needed to be neutral, warm, and understatedly striking. The key? Sourcing the right marble.

“Finding a stone that felt soothing and calm, yet still delivered a wow-factor, was essential,” says DeCotiis. Now, the marble ties into the soft oat cabinetry, ornate plaster moulding, and vintage-inspired brass fixtures, resulting in a space that’s timeless and impactful.

Creating a Formal Yet Comfortable Living Room

Adjoining the kitchen is the main living room. “While compact in footprint, it was designed to function as a formal space without sacrificing everyday comfort,” says DeCotiis.

This is primarily thanks to the sectional's rounded shape, which defines the area and adds seating. “It allowed the room to feel intentional and refined, yet approachable and livable for daily use,” explains DeCotiis.

A black fireplace—with an elegant herringbone inset reminiscent of the flooring—is in bold contrast to the room's delicate warmth.

Statement Tiles Transform the Bathrooms

Tiles were the primary inspiration for the bathroom designs. “Each space began with a statement tile that set the tone for the entire room,” says DeCotiis. “Once we chose the tile, the rest of the finishes and details naturally fell into place, creating bathrooms with distinct personalities that still feel cohesive within the overall home.”

The bathrooms were also ideal spaces to infuse richer hues into the design, offsetting the house's largely neutral palette.
