Our Top Tips For Curb Appeal
They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but it’s hard not to judge the exterior of a house, since it’s the outside of your home that makes a first impression.
Here are our top tips for increasing your home’s curb appeal.
1. Garden & Landscaping

Landscaping plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall appearance of a house, since a well-maintained yard and strategically placed plants can create a welcoming ambience. But before you dive into a costly landscaping project, consider consulting with a horticulturist, who can guide you toward the perfect plants for your sunlight, soil and gardening skills. No green thumb? No problem! A pair of planters filled with low-maintenance potted plants or arrangements will instantly elevate your front door. Swap out the arrangements seasonally for year-round appeal.
2. Roofing

A properly maintained roof often goes unnoticed. However, since the roof represents a third of a house’s exterior, if your home has a deteriorating roof or one in an unsuitable colour, it will be the first thing people notice. In recent months, a new roofing trend has emerged in Canada: copper-toned roofs.
“Copper, brown and orange hues are becoming increasingly popular in interior design. So, it’s no surprise they’re making their way to the exterior as well,” says Nathalie Lambert, marketing director at BP Canada, which specializes in residential roofing shingles. “Homeowners love the warm, welcoming finish these tones give to a roof, creating an attractive visual effect. Copper’s signature brown hue also aligns with the earthy trend, as its natural look blends beautifully with rustic or wooded environments.”
Bonus Tip: Try before you buy? yes! Since a new roof will last for many years, it's wise to try it out before purchasing. Free virtual tools, like BP Canada's Visualizer, allow you to view different roofing options for your home with just a few clicks.
3. The facade

For a fresh new look, consider new cladding. The cost to replace cladding is estimated to range from $25,000 for a bungalow to $90,000 for a multi-story home.
Vinyl
Typically ranging from $6.50 to $9 per square foot, vinyl is considered one of the most budget-friendly options.
Wood Fibre
Ranging from $6 to $13 per square foot, this material, popularized in Quebec by the CanExel brand, perfectly mimics the appearance of wood without the high cost.
Brick
Ranging from $30 to $45 per square foot, brick adds an unmatched elegant touch. There’s no need to cover the entire facade; this approach is often chosen to replace surfaces damaged by weather or wear.
Aluminum
Increasingly popular in Quebec, aluminum is one of the most affordable options (ranging from $7.50 to $12 per square foot). It comes in various colours and can even be painted.
Recycled Wood
For those seeking an eco-friendly and durable option suited to our climate, recycled wood—whether oak or pine—proves to be an excellent choice. Once it’s treated to resist moisture and insects, this material offers immense potential. When paired with stone elements, it adds a rustic charm, but it can take on a more contemporary feel when combined with a steel door or concrete wall.
Steel
Resistant to corrosion, weather and humidity, steel will maintain its attractive appearance for decades. It’s also recyclable and requires minimal maintenance. Matte black brushed-steel cladding has seen a surge in popularity with the rise of Scandinavian and farmhouse styles. To add extra warmth, it’s often paired with light wood accents.
4. House Number

While traditional plaques with address numbers still have their place, stealing the spotlight right now are individual digits arranged vertically to create a floating effect. Favoured for their sleek, clean-lined look, these numbers will add a minimalist modern touch to any entrance. However, they should be installed on a contrasting surface to maximize their visibility. With the rising trend of houses with dark exterior finishes, we’re betting that white and stainless-steel digits will be especially popular!
5. Front Entrance

Whether for privacy reasons or to add a modern vibe, solid doors are a must these days, as they bring undeniable character to a home’s entrance. While it may seem like a simple update, a new front door can completely transform the facade. Modern, classic, wooden or metal – the style possibilities are endless. Opt for a long vertical handle to further emphasize the contemporary look of the door.
