7 Ways To Infuse Character Into A Boring Home

Whether you’ve just bought a modern grey-and-white home or your beloved abode is just looking meh, adding a dose of old-timey character will take your space to new heights.

When you think about a cozy, lived-in home, you may picture the set of any Nancy Meyer's movie. These classic houses are filled to the brim with books, trinkets, and an overall sense of warmth.

If you find your home to be lacking in this department (or you want to up the character ante), try these simple hacks. From small swaps to weekend projects, they’ll infuse personality into any space.

1. Add moulding

From intricate crown moulding to DIY picture frame moulding, a little texture goes a long way to making your house look like a home.

2. Paint

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with white paint! It acts as a clean base that instantly brightens up a room. That said, too much white-on-grey-on-beige can look flat and lifeless. Bring some colour into your home with a fresh paint job, whether bold or neutral. For an extra oomph, incorporate wallpaper or textured wood panelling into your design.

3. Update hardware

New-builds typically come with standard (read: cookie-cutter) door knobs and hardware. Swap them out for something that’s more on-trend, such as a vintage find or bold brass.

4. Switch out your lighting

When it comes to simple design upgrades, lighting it typically at the top of the list. Adding in a funky chandelier or quirky lamp instantly makes your space look more intentional.

5. Consider window treatments

Generic blinds will certainly do their job, but they can quickly look stale. Swap these out for woven shades or a cool curtain—a cozy window treatment bound to add warmth and character to any room.

6. Infuse artwork and mementos

One of the best ways to bring more life to a space is to infuse it with things you love. Whether that’s your favourite artwork, family heirlooms, or souvenirs you’ve picked up over the years, intentionally working them into your design will make your place feel even more homey.

7. Use area rugs

Not only are area rugs plush and soft under bare feet, their unique patterns infuse personality into a space.
