This Tilework Trend Is Taking Over Subway Tiles For Your Kitchen & Bathroom

Zellige tiles are once again making their mark as a must-have in our interiors.

Originally handmade in Morocco, these small glazed terracotta tiles captivate with their shimmering finish, rich colours, and artisanal charm and are taking over kitchens and bathrooms—as bold features and subtle accents. True zellige tiles tell the story of Moroccan craftsmanship and tradition in every piece.

Zellige is one of the most well-known elements of Moroccan architectural heritage. This technique, whose Arabic name means “ceramic” or “small polished stone,” is defined by several manufacturing characteristics. First, clay tiles are fired, glazed with pigments, and then fired again, giving them their glossy appearance. Skilled artisans then cut them into geometric shapes, called tessera, using a sharp hammer. Traditional zellige tilework starts with a central star; around it, geometric shapes are arranged to fill every gap and form intricate vegetal or abstract mosaic patterns.

Zellige tiles are now being recreated all over the world, moving slightly away from ancient techniques. They’re no longer defined by complex geometric shapes, and these days, the designs can simply consist of stacked square or rectangular tiles, or even take shape as chevrons. Each tile, however, is still individually cut, making them unique, and they must be made exclusively from clay and be installed with near-invisible joints—these are the hallmarks of zellige.

In the kitchen

Zellige is perfect for a kitchen backsplash or the sides of a countertop. Whether using simple or more intricate tiles, it adds texture and originality to the space. Larger tiles can create the illusion of a bigger room, while smaller tiles offer a charming, more traditional mosaic effect.

In the bathroom

The glossy character of traditional zellige works especially well in a bathroom. On shower walls, along a bathtub or around a sink, the tile will bring plenty of personality. In watery blues, it can create a relaxing spa-like atmosphere. It can also be used on the floor, but keep in mind that zellige’s shiny finish may make the surface slightly slippery.

On the fireplace

Tiling the fireplace surround is a bold and stylish choice. As vertical rectangular tiles, zellige will adorn it beautifully, always with that glossy touch that plays with the light and draws the eye. Extend the tiling onto the floor to highlight the fireplace further and add even more visual interest to your living room.

Around Doorways

If you love small details that make a big difference, zellige as door, arch or window trim is for you. Placed along the edges with accent colours, it’ll brighten up your entire home.

Outdoors

For both its character and its Mediterranean vibe, zellige is ideal for outdoor spaces. On balcony edges, patios, pool surrounds, or in an outdoor kitchen, it instantly adds charm while reflecting the sunlight. Truly dreamy!
