Upgrade Your Gallery Wall With This Vintage Accessory

Gallery walls aren't going anywhere—it's a trend that seems to transcend time.

However, there are ways to update your gallery wall for a more current look. We've been seeing designers use gallery rails in the kitchen to hang utensils for years, but now they are making their way back to their original purpose: to showcase artwork.

What is a gallery rail?

A gallery rail is a long rod that can be suspended along a wall or to a ceiling where it meets the wall. From it, you attach hanging chains, which hold your artwork. Gallery rails were popular choice for showcasing photos and memorabilia in the 1800s. Today, designers are using them as a nod to vintage design, especially in modern homes.

Why use a gallery rail?

This renaissance of gallery rails is best for people who want to add some personality to their decor. You can think of a gallery rail with hanging chains as jewelry or an accessory. You can choose from many different style of rails, like something ornate or sleek and streamlined. They also make hanging artwork in a gallery style much easier than a traditional gallery wall. You are able to hang pictures and adjust them as necessary, based on height and size, without putting multiple holes in your wall or worrying about exact measurements. This also makes changing out pieces simple.

Why we like gallery rails

Not only is this an easy way to create a beautiful showcase of art, but gallery rails allow you to easily change out pieces. They also create more visual interest in your room and give the illusion of higher ceilings—the hanging chains that run vertically up and down the wall help to draw your eye the same way.
