A Foolproof Design Hack Designers Use For The Perfect Colour Scheme
Pulling together a seamless colour scheme is easy as 60, 30, 10!
Colour is the foundation of any design. The shades you choose to incorporate into your home set the overall tone and can quickly distinguish a minimalist aesthetic from an eclectic style.
While you can simply mix colours that you think work together, many designers use a secret formula to artfully develop perfect colour palettes. Known as the 60-30-10 rule, this hack will give you an edge the next time you decide to update your home.
Here’s how it works.
What is the 60-30-10 rule?

The 60-30-10 rule is an interior design secret for creating the optimal proportions in a room. It states that 60 percent of the room should be a dominant hue, 30 percent should be a secondary colour, and 10 percent should be an accent shade.

In most rooms, the dominant colour is brought to life through wall paint. It’s the background colour to your design.
The next 30 percent—AKA the colour that will bring depth and interest to the space—is your secondary shade. Incorporate it into your larger furniture, such as your dining table or living room couch, and artwork.
Finally, your accent colours are where you have the most room to play around. Swap out throw pillows and blankets depending on the season, or switch between bold and subtle designs.
Most importantly, go with the palette that best suits your style and makes you happy to be at home!
