Spring 2010: Colour trend report

What better way to get though a dreary winter than pondering how to give your home a facelift come spring? From paint to accessories, we found out what colours to look for as soon as the snow melts. We talked to Joanne Kakkavas, owner and principal designer of Roomy Home Interiors to find out what colours will be taking spring by storm.

“For spring we will be bursting with colour in our showroom,” Joanne says. “Think Miami Beach meets kitschy 60s with pure greens and bright pinks, mixed with soft yellows.” But this doesn’t have to mean a complete redecoration of your existing space. Consider keeping things neutral with a background palette of whites and linens, but add a pop of colour when it comes to accents.

Pastels are a great way to add colour without overdoing it on accents. This Boos Gathering Island adds surface space to your kitchen and has a classic, vintage-inspired feel. $1295 US, Williams Sonoma.

colour-trend-Green.jpg

Nothing says fresh, clean and new quite like green, making it the perfect shade to welcome spring. These organic bath towels with a fern motif are the perfect seasonal accessory. $9-29 US, Pottery Barn.

colour-trend-Pink.jpg

Pink has moved well beyond the unsettling strawberry sorbet or bubblegum tones you may recall from childhood. This pillow makes for a pretty yet sophisticated pairing for a neutral sofa. $65, Wishfern.

colour-trend-White.jpg

Whether on the walls or with accessories, bright white can’t help but make a statement. This Warp Vase puts a unique twist on a standard accessory. The glossy finish is a striking addition to any table. $54 US, Unison.

colour-trend-Turquoise.jpg

It’s not hard to see why turquoise is Pantone’s colour of the year for 2010. This shade conjures up images of seaside villas and Caribbean beaches. Get one step closer to the ocean (and stay cozy) with this luxurious throw. $129 US, Room & Board.

Joanne has been using grey hues from light, soft and bluish to dark concrete. “People have just adopted this colour as a cool neutral backdrop,” she says. This textured rug is a great example of how grey can stand out without overtaking a room. Starting at $425 US, Angela Adams.

One of SICO’s picks for this year, yellow is all about brightening things up. Try this round Natuzzi 'Sassi II' Ottoman in creamy yellow leather. $439, Sears.ca

colour-trend-orange.jpg

Another one of SICO’s 2010 choices, orange can seem like a bold option, but with so many variations on this sumptuous shade, there’s bound to be one for you. We love this Arlington leather armchair in a sophisticated burnt orange. $1399 US, Pottery Barn.
