20 questions with Christine Dovey of Bjiou and Boheme

Christine Dovey is a beautiful example of how following your passion will lead to great things. A blogger and decor enthusiast (to say the least), Christine boldly went where many fear to go: starting from scratch. Feeling uninspired by her surroundings, she sold her furniture and began a quest to fill her home with pieces that she truly loves. Through blogging this journey on Bijou and Boheme, she has found a promiment voice in the decor community as a top blogger and, now, Style at Home contributer.

1 If you could shadow any designer for a day, who would it be?

Christine Dovey I think I'd feel dead and in heaven if I was given the opportunity to shadow Kelly Wearstler around for the day. She's absolutely my girl crush design idol.

2 Where do you look for an obscure source of inspiration?
CD I'm not sure if it's obscure, but I find fashion illustration very inspirational in terms of design.

3 Favourite restaurant?
CD Scaramouche. I've been there once and literally felt like my mouth was exploding from the nirvana that was my meal.

4 What’s your favourite room to decorate?
CD I'd say a foyer. I love that this space gives off the grand first impression in a home and really sets the tone for what's to come. It's sort of the first and all important act, if you will, and if done well, allows people to fall in love at first sight with a design aesthetic and point of view.

5 What’s your current paint colour obsession?

CD This one is always the same for me - a soft blushy pink. Though, I will say, I'm also very smitten these days with mint and lacquered inky blue.

6 If one song could be the soundtrack to your life, what would it be?
CD I'm going to cheat and pick two. Right now, I'd go with Mumford and Sons I Will Wait. The chorus reminds me of my kids laughter. Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is probably my long time favourite theme song though. It's what I walked down the aisle to; it makes me think of raindrops and lollipops.

7 What’s the one store you could spend hours browsing?
CD If we're talking bricks and mortar, Decorum, hands down. The store is me in shop form. But if we're speaking online, 1st Dibs wins the race. There's just so much pretty to look at.

8 London, Paris or New York?
CD Hum... This one is a toughie. Though I'd most likely pick New York to live in, I have to go with Paris overall for its feminine charm - it's just so darn chic. christine-dovey-2.jpg
9 If money were no object, what one thing would you buy?

CD I always said that if I was rich, I'd spend all of my money on original artwork. I'd also adore a real Serge Mouille ceiling fixture.

10 What do you consider to be the most iconic design piece of the past century?
CD If I weigh the idea of being iconic with my own preferences, I'd have to say the Platner chair is the most personally iconic. I adore how it's sculptural, elegant and still somewhat whimsical in design.

11 Favourite movie?

CD The adult in me would have to pick Love Actually, but the kid in me will always love Miracle on 34th St. most of all.

12 What’s your favourite movie interior?
CD For modern, Sex and the City 2; Carrie's apartment slayed me. But for vintage it's Breakfast at Tiffany's. christine-dovey4.jpg
13 What do you think is the easiest way to update a room?

CD Easy - add beautiful original artwork.

14 Best coffee table book?
CD This is going to sound shallow but I mostly pick coffee table books based on how pretty there are so on that basis, my favourite is the gorgeous blushy pink Christian Louboutin number. As for the one I most want to own and actually read, that prize goes to Rhapsody by Kelly Wearstler.

15 What’s your favourite way to spend a lazy Sunday?
CD I spend most Sundays dragging my husband and family to antique markets. Tthere's not much I love more than finding one-of-a-kind treasures.

CD Both, depending on my mood.

17 What do you think is the best home renovation you can do to your home?
CD I'll have to go with the well-established standard on this one and say renovating your kitchen is definitely the way to go. It's the room where people spend most of their so why not make it the most fabulous?  Plus, there's the whole re-sale deal. Kitchens just make the most sense investment-wise.

18 What is your favourite space that you’ve designed?
CD To date, my favourite space is my living room. It's probably the best reflection of my aesthetic.

19 What’s the biggest design faux pas?
CD In my humble opinion, matched sets of furniture. Though I also really hate a brown leather parsons chairs, mass produced printed canvases, boob lights and travertine tile.

20 Marilyn, Audrey or Jackie?
CD Audrey. There's just something so romantic about her persona. I love how she so effortlessly balanced quirkiness with elegance.
