20 questions with The Moggit Girls

Whether you're a decorating magazine, an interior designer, or an edgy furniture designer, no one is safe from The Moggit Girls, the blogging duo that celebrate the ugly side of design. Their banter is not cruel, however, just incredibly funny and truly addictive (you'll find yourself going back to the Mogg Blog everyday for more). We caught up with Joy and Janet -- the ladies behind the blog -- to get their insight on hot paint colours, great stores to browse, and whether or not taxidermy is a design do or don't (we're sure you can guess).

1 If you could shadow any designer for a day, who would it be?

Joy Kelly Wearstler (Janet is dying right now). Although I may not agree with all of her design choices, I really do find her fascinating and would love to know how she comes up with her very unique design aesthetic!
Janet Barbara Barry. My dream house -- the one I've built in my imagination -- is chock-full of her gorgeous furniture.

2 Where do you look for obscure sources of inspiration?
Joy
Antique stores -- they always have something I've never laid eyes on before.
Janet Old movies -- I love watching them for their sets and interiors. It never ceases to amaze me that even 80 years later, so many of them still look and feel incredibly relevant.

3 What's your fave restaurant?
Janet
Marge's Bistro. They make the best french onion soup ever (just ask Marge, whose bistro is actually just her home).
Joy Ditto (but I can never seem to get in!).

4 What’s your favourite room to decorate?
Joy The living room. We spend so much time in there and because I'm a Gemini, I crave change, so I love to constantly switch the furniture and accessories around.
Janet The bedroom. It's the one room in the house where you have the opportunity to truly express your own aesthetic without worrying about the wants or needs of others ... what's that, Joy? Oh. Yeah. Right. Except for the wants and needs of your spouse. You should really consider those because those are really important, too.

5 What’s your current paint colour obsession?
Joy
Right now I am wooed by various shades of charcoal grey -- and I usually hate grey!
Janet A very soft, pale, buttery, creamy yellow (do I have enough adjectives in there?). This particular colour always has been, and I think always will be, my go-to shade. I just never seem to tire of it!

6 If one song could be the soundtrack to your life, what would it be?
Joy 'Joy to the World' (the 'Jeremiah Bullfrog' version -- not the Christmas carol!).
Janet Show off. That's really a hard one for me to follow because the only song I know with my name in the title is 'Dammit, Janet' from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Oh, wait -- that might actually work...

7 What’s the one store you could spend hours browsing?
Joy
ABC Carpet and Home -- just leave me there for a week!
Janet Give me a great flea market or an antiques fair and I'm off.

8 London, Paris or New York?
Joy
That's a tough one. London for its history, Paris for its romance, but I gotta say NYC had me at "Hey-- I'm walkin' heyah!".  Loved it. The vibe was palpable.
Janet Ugh. Joy, you city-name dropper. Sadly, of the three, I've only been to New York -- a situation in dire need of fixing! That said, I absolutely loved New York, but Paris is my dream.

9 If money were no object, what one thing would you buy?
Joy
A home in California with sweeping ocean views! (Now watch Janet up the ante on this one.)
Janet Ha! I'd buy a classically styled, updated villa set on the shores of a gorgeous lake in northern Italy near the Swiss border. And oh, I would just happen to have a very handsome and exceptionally charming next-door neighbour named George...

10 What do you consider to be the most iconic design piece of the past century?
Joy
The classic Barcelona chair -- it just never gets old!
Janet Rats. She took my answer.

This armoire in Joy's foyer was custom-built to suit her family's needs. One side functions as a closet and the other as a wall unit.

11 What's your favourite movie?
Joy
'When Harry Met Sally' (Nora Ephron, I love you)
Janet I'm so sappy -- mine is 'It's A Wonderful Life'. I cry every single time!

12 What’s your favourite movie interior?
Joy
'Something's Gotta Give' - the kitchen and bedroom were to die for and I also really liked the layout of the house.
Janet I've got way too many answers for this question, but a couple from the short list are: the inn from 'Holiday Inn' and the house from 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir'. Most recently, that visually stunning bakery interior from 'It's Complicated' grabbed me.

13 What do you think is the easiest way to update a room?
Joy
Paint and accessories -- the two things that can changed up without breaking the bank.
Janet I also say paint and accessories; they're easy, cheap and deliver huge bang-for-your-buck visual impact.

14 Best coffee table book?
Joy
The one on my coffee table right now is Above Paris by Robert Cameron and Pierre Salinger. It features stunning aerial views of Paris.
Janet Any lovely, heavy cookbook with gorgeous foodie photography -- yum!

15 What’s your fave way to spend a lazy Sunday?
Joy
If it's the summer, then it's by the pool. If it's winter, then I'm hanging out with my family on the couch watching HGTV and the Food Network (with a stack of magazines and a pile of take-out menus nearby).
Janet My 'Fantasy Sunday' (which never happens because most of mine involve hockey, football and homework) is: a fabulous brunch at a great restaurant followed by an afternoon curled up on the couch by a cosy fire with hubby and the kids watching a few of my favourite old movies (note: in the fantasy, hubby and kids are all actually interested in doing this).

16 Do you like to be the entertainer or be entertained?
Joy Depends on what time of the month it is!
Janet To borrow a phrase from Simon Cowell, 'Well, if I'm being honest...'  I'm a bit of a control freak so I do kinda like to be 'in charge'. There. I said it.

17 What do you think is the best renovation you can do to your home?
Joy
A well-thought-out kitchen renovation with amazing upgrades (Hubby, are you listening?).
Janet Kitchens and bathrooms. When they're done right, nirvana. Otherwise, utter disaster. There's nothing worse than a badly done kitchen or bath.

18 What is your fave space that you’ve designed?
Joy
Our foyer, featuring the large armoire. We looked for ages for the right piece to fit the bill but never found one, so we ended up designing exactly what we wanted and had it custom-made.
Janet Our master bathroom -- we did it on the shoestring of all shoestring budgets during our reno a few years back. The thing I love most about it is that we put a window seat in there -- it's just a little touch of luxe!

19 What’s the biggest design faux pas?
Joy
I think it's following a trend you're not comfortable with.
Janet Yeah, that and taxidermy!

20 Marilyn, Audrey or Jackie?
Joy & Janet
No question about it: iconic Audrey!
