Inside design: Anne Hepfer

A New York City native living in Canada with clients across the continent, Anne Hepfer ranks among Canada’s best designers to mix whimsy with preppy and quiet elegance with energetic bursts of colour to stunning effect. From a malachite-green wall to posh upholstered headboards in punchy red and blue fabric, we love Anne’s ability to make unexpected elements look like they’ve belonged there all along.

SAH What’s your favourite colour palette for 2013?
AH Jewel tones against a neutral backdrop. Emerald is the Pantone colour of the year, and I’m a huge fan! anne-hepfer-wallpaper.jpg “Think bold Marimekko and preppy Parish-Hadley meet 1950s California surf. It may sound like design ADD, but somehow it works,” says Anne Hepfer.

SAH What’s your favourite way to use a bold wallpaper?
AH I love a powder room done floor to ceiling in a fun wallcovering. It’s like a little jewel box – a complete surprise when you enter. For a lighter touch, try wallpapering the back of a bookshelf.

“I love anything black and white, like chevron or zebra prints - they add graphic fun and whimsy” -
Anne Hepfer.

SAH Where do you find inspiration for a new palette?
AH Travelling is the best way to explore new ideas for colour, but sometimes finding inspiration is as simple and unexpected as seeing someone on the street in a fabulous dress with a great print or picking up the various colours from a flower arrangement at a friend’s home.

“Trying to work colour into a space? Start with a few decor accessories in your accent shade and live with them until you’re comfortable with trying more” - Anne Hepfer.

SAH What are your go-to lipstick and nail polish colours?

AH Cocoa My Coconut (where do they come up with the names?!) from the Balm’s Plump Your Pucker line and Dior Addict Extreme in 476 Plaza – my favourite pink – for my lips. OPI’s Black Cherry Chutney and Skyfall are my current go-to nail polish colours.

Colour and pattern should exist where they feel right. Every space has different light throughout the day, season and year – it’s something you should play with. The trick is knowing when you’ve found the right balance.
