Q&A: What Colour Should I Paint My Garage Door?

You’ve got design questions. We’ve got the answers. Designer and Style at Home contributor Karl Lohnes solves your decorating challenges.

Question:

Can you help us pick a paint colour for our garage door? The 1954 house originally had a cedar garage door, like the cedar on the house. Our entry doors are on the side of the house and painted in Coral Glow 026 by Benjamin Moore, but—unlike the garage door—they aren’t very visible from the road. Currently, the garage door is painted the same colour as the foundation, but the front of the garage is brick. Should we go with the brick colour or replace it with a cedar-look door (expensive), or some other option?—Mary Lou M., via email

Answer:

In most cases, I would say paint the garage door a colour similar to the body of the house (the brick), so the door blends in. But in this situation, since it’s so visible from the road, I suggest highlighting the door so that it stands out as an architectural feature. Replacing the door with a cedar (or cedar look) door would be ideal, creating a connection between the front facade and the garage area. If a new door isn’t in the budget, match a paint colour to the existing cedar, which will create a visual link between these elements. For a possible match, look at Valspar’s Jungle Beat 8004-18G in a sheen finish.
