10 home accessories you need this fall

Fall is a great time for decor lovers. The cool air means it’s a great time to tackle painting projects and other household tasks that were too withering to face in the hot months, but on the other hand, the crispness is the perfect excuse to do nothing and cozy up on the sofa under a new throw blanket. It’s also the time of year where we naturally spend more time indoors, and so it makes it an ideal time to be highly selective about new purchases.

The ethos of “cheap and cheerful” rules in the summer, but in the fall, consider that accessories will be purposeful and beautiful right through to the spring. So pick only items that will bring you joy and utility every day. “Brass is so big right now, decorative objets, light fixtures and furnishings are easily found, as well as wallpaper that incorporates the [brass] theme -- they bring richness and warmth to a space,” says Toronto decorator and stylist Laura Collins of Laura Collins Design. “Faux fur, Hudson’s Bay memorabilia, cottage chic, are now trends that may be seen year round, including faux antlers, and wood panelling,” she says. Here are some lovely, on-trend examples of fall accessories that we love.

Pixel pattern rug

We’ve seen ikat, chevrons, animal print, but what’s new and fresh for fall is “pixellated” prints, like this woven rug. A bonus is that it conceals lint so you don’t have to vacuum it constantly. Multi Pixel rug, West Elm, $892.

Brass tray

After more than a decade of playing Cinderella to shiny chrome and bright stainless steel, the golden tones of brass are big again. A small brass metal tray looks great anywhere, as a practical or pretty decor accessory. Long gold metal tray, Pottery Barn, $231.

Ram with antlers

Faux gold antlers on a white ram? Why not! We love that this item incorporates two of Laura’s fall trend predictions, gold and antlers. Created by the Novogratz husband-and-wife design team, it’s a natural against wooden doors or as an unexpected textural element on a photo gallery wall. Goldie the Wall Hanging Ram, CB2, $80.

Wallpaper with brass

Farrow & Ball’s Ranelagh neoclassical wallpaper isn’t new for fall, but it incorporates the all-important brass and metallic trend we’re seeing so much of. It’s soft blue and muted brass hues are seasonally appropriate for fall, but they are also simply timeless as well. We love it in living rooms and bedrooms. Ranelagh BP 18, Farrow and Ball, $225 USD per double roll.

Faux fur throw

For a luxury cottage look for fall, try a faux-fur throw that adds lots of texture and a Game of Thrones vibe to your home. The secret is to get a good-quality fake fur that’s ultrasoft and has excellent depth of colour, like this coyote imitation one from Restoration Hardware. Luxe Faux Fur Throw in Coyote, Restoration Hardware, $99 USD.

Camel coloured jars

In years past, camel was not a hue we’d seen a whole lot of in terms of ceramics, but it matches so elegantly with the brass that is on-trend this fall. Invest in gorgeous ginger jars from Williams-Sonoma that are not only hand-made, but are also hand-me-down quality. Ginger jars in Camel, Williams-Sonoma, from $250 USD.
