2013 design trends
A new year means a new look for your home, taking pieces that were hot for 2012 and revamping or replacing them to reflect the 2013 trends. Designer
Lisa Canning knows a thing or two about what we can expect to see filling the shelves of our favourite home decor stores this year, as she hit up High Point Market in North Carolina, the world’s largest trade show for home furnishings. Wall-to-wall product made it easy for Lisa to assess what colours, patterns and accessories were going to be popular purchases in the coming year.
“In general, I think we will see a continuation of a very personal approach to interior design, with pieces that have a story, whether they were made by your grandmother or by your favourite designer,” says Lisa. “It's a custom look that has charm and character, where every piece is beautiful, tells a story and looks unique.”
Below, Lisa shares some of her predictions for what will be hot in Canadian homes for 2013, from colour to lighting to fabulous furniture styles.
Colour
If 2012 was the year of Tangerine Tango, it only makes sense that Pantone would top it with a showstopper like Emerald for 2013’s colour of the year. But emerald is not the only colour dominating this year. “Bold, vibrant colours will be everywhere including orange, purple, raspberry, and shades of denim blues,” says Lisa. “And while colour was very prevalent at High Point Market, there were also plenty of layered neutrals – think of a neutral sofa with various shades of similar hued pillows.”

For 2013, there’s no holding back on the glamour when it comes to lighting. “Brass will be massive for this year when it comes to lighting and decorating in general,” says Lisa. Opt for an oversized brass pendant in the kitchen for a statement piece or a vintage table lamp in a home office for a retro edge.
Styling
A well-edited, styled space is on trend for 2013 as well, says Lisa, and the difference is in the details. “It’s the idea that all the small details of our lives and homes can be styled, even home office accessories – creating a vignette out of vintage scissors, a red stapler and sparkly thumb tacks. Look to magazines, websites and social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest to see how these small details can be celebrated.”
Patterns
“We certainly won’t be shy when it comes to patterns in 2013,” says Lisa. "Animal print (leopard, zebra, cowhide, ostrich texture) will continue to rise, and we’ll also see more bold pattern used in furniture rather than just small amounts in accessories or wallpaper.” If you’re not comfortable introducing an outspoken print into a large item like a sofa, try an ottoman or pouf, a piece which will be a popular furniture staple in 2013.
Furniture
This year, it’s time to get creative with furniture, mixing up classic styles with unique elements for a custom look. “Traditional furniture with whimsical touches, like animal legs on wing backs, claws on ottomans, and branch legs on accent tables, provides a fanciful touch to modern and traditional rooms alike,” says Lisa.

1 Emerald accessories
The best part of Pantone introducing a new trend colour every year is the chance to give your home a bright new facelift! 2 Neutral-on-neutral
There’s not a designer in the world who doesn’t have a soft spot in their heart for the simplicity and serenity that a neutral room evokes. 3 Styled vignettes
Create a stunning vignette in a corner of your home, adding any little objet d’arts and personal touches that you wish – it’s your opportunity to be totally creative! Whether you’re looking to bring your space a vintage Mad Men vibe or a touch of Old Hollywood glamour, brass is an adaptable metal that can fit any design scheme or era. 6 Raspberry and orange

Though animal prints seem to always be making a comeback, they’re not for the decorating faint-of-heart.
