We know a trick or two about casting a spell this season. Take, for 
example, what our design team accomplished at the Toronto home of 
Isabelle Patenaude, a long-time lover of all things Halloween. From quirky 
jack-o’-lanterns to retro-inspired decorations, imagination and a new 
twist on some old essentials make a delightful holiday for every age.

Authentic vintage decorations can be pricey, but reproductions are becoming easier and easier to find as Halloween takes pride of place in fall decorating. Favourite candies never go out of style.

Pumpkin patch porch

The Patenaudes’ porch ushers ghosts, goblins and fairy princesses to the door in colourful style. The look is kept friendly with orange and white lanterns. Creepy crawlies are easy to make. Squeeze black balloons in the middle to make two sections, and wind grey pipe cleaners around for legs.

Jet black ravens

It’s a detail fans of Edgar Allan Poe would love. Black birds (try a murder of crows!) add foreboding.

Small seasonal touches

It doesn’t take much to bring Halloween spirit into a room. In the Patenaudes’ minimal kitchen, for example, bringing home the season is as easy as setting out some clear containers full of Halloween treats, a couple of vintage decorations, and an orange kettle and bowl. Their bright effect makes a dramatic focal point in an otherwise neutral room, and helps to visually warm up the space.
