Our editors round up the hottest tile trends for 2019

From ones with textured finishes to a watercolour look, tiles are on their way to becoming the look-at-me element in any room.

Tiles are having a moment. More and more, designers are choosing to put a room’s focus on the tile work – and for great reason. As we recently discovered at the Coverings show in Atlanta, Ga., and CERSAIE in Bologna, Italy, ceramics offer ample artful possibilities to suit any style. Here, we outline the top six trends for 2019.

1. Wild wallcovering

Tiles are giving wallpaper a run for its money. Modern print technology enables acute detail. The surface, like Operae Domestic Jungle by Ornamenta, boasts the aesthetic appeal of a conventional wallcovering with the benefit of hyper-durability.

2. Sizeable slabs

Level tile, marblegranitedepot.com.

Ceramics are now available in the largest proportions we’ve ever seen, as evidenced by this 5'3" x 10'5" monolith. The size makes fantastic faux stone like this one appear all the more authentic.

Editor's Tip: Among other applications, tiles of gargantuan proportions lend themselves well to faking the look of marble.

3. Textured treatment

Featuring a dynamic aspect and inviting a closer look, textured finishes are a welcome introduction in typically cold rooms like bathrooms and kitchens.

4. Heavy metal

Metalworx tiles, stone-tile.com.

Is there anything tiles can’t do? Perfectly imitating sheets of iron – complete with pseudo-weathered rust-like edges – this floor would suggest not. The rugged style is sure to lend any space an industrial loft feel.

5. The new encaustic

null

Artisanal encaustic tiles maintain their cult following. Fresh interpretations, such as the watercolour-esque Acquerello by Made+39, are lending the look a contemporary spin. Think: simplified patterns and palettes. Less is more for this trend.

6. Terrazzo take-back

null

Artwork Deco 5 tiles, stone-tile.com.

Terrazzo – that speckled flooring that dominated the early to mid-20th century – is back and better than ever. Case in point: this brilliant blue tile featuring the telltale graphic flecks in contrasting off-white.
