Trends often tend to follow a similar trajectory, whether it’s in fashion or interior design.

You’ve probably noticed the abundance of red in stores right now; from shoes to a bright scarf, the colour is taking over.

Well, unexpected pops of red have finally made their way into the world of interior design, and it’s trending thanks to TikTok.

Think: A bright red picture frame, cherry table lamp, or wine-coloured throw on your couch; the key is to add a red accent in places where, at first glance, it doesn’t belong. So how does it always work?

TikTok user Taylor Simon (@intayriors) recently coined the term “unexpected red theory,” as explained in the video below:

“These things have no business being red, but it automatically looks better,” she explains. The more unexpected your red item is, the more elevated your space will feel. The key is to choose smaller accessories instead of going full-out with red-painted walls, for example.

The good thing about the unexpected red theory is that, just like a classic red lip or red nail polish, it’s a timeless colour and the look will never truly go out of style.
