What Time Of Year Should You Start Using Your Humidifier?

Dry air, beware!

Humidifiers are an unsung hero of dry weather. The small machines add moisture to the air, relieving symptoms of asthma, hydrating skin, and improving sleep quality.

Here’s everything you need to know about when to turn on your humidifier for best results.

How humid should your home be?

Ideally, the humidity in your home should sit somewhere between 30 to 55 percent.

Unless you live in a dry climate, such as the desert in Arizona, you likely don’t need to run your humidifier during the summer since the air is typically naturally humid enough. You can use a portable humidity reader to learn the exact levels in your home, or go by the signs—a dry throat, nose, or skin.

When is the best time to turn on your humidifier?

Most experts suggest turning on your humidifier as soon as you start regularly heating your home. Central heating and space heaters can quickly dry out your house, so staying on top of your humidifier will help keep your body feeling its best.

Be sure to give your humidifier a good cleaning every so often to keep it fresh.
