7 Household Spots You Can Declutter In 15 Minutes Or Less
Cleaning can be a real chore, but it doesn’t have to take over your whole day.
In fact, breaking your decluttering process into chunks can actually make you more productive. “It’s a way of getting out of overwhelm and into action,” says professional organizer Shira Gill.
The bestselling author, who coined her productivity hack as the “15-minute win,” suggests spending just 15 minutes on one single task, no distractions. This can mean cleaning out your fridge, starting to tackle your closet, or even organizing your wallet.
“Those little efforts really compound so you're never facing a massive, overwhelming cleanup,” says Gill. In turn, the dopamine boost you get from completing a task can energize you to take on the next thing.
Here are seven forgotten nooks in your house that you can easily declutter in 15 minutes or less.
1. Stairs
Do your stairs fall victim to odds and ends that you keep meaning to bring upstairs but always manage to walk past? Take a few minutes to gather up the clutter and place everything in their rightful homes. You’ll appreciate the lack of hazards!
2. Nightstand
Whether the top of your nightstand is covered in books and glasses, or it’s filled with random knick knacks, this is a satisfyingly simple spot to clean. Studies have even shown that a tidy sleep space can help you fall and stay asleep better.
3. Entryway
Your front entryway should be a practical and mess-free space, but it often becomes a dumping ground for keys, outerwear, and more. We suggest investing in key hooks, and a small tray or bowl for the inevitable life things you’ll leave by the door.
4. Under the sink
The dark home of the garbage bin and cleaning products, the cupboard under your sink might need a little love. Take some time to go through your old products and toss out anything expired.
5. Junk drawer
Ah, the dreaded junk drawer. Stuffed to the brim with receipts, bills, and a random screwdriver that always manages to sneak its way in, this spot tends to be a halfway point to the garbage. Clear out your years-old junk and consider adding in some drawer organizers to keep things tidy in the future.
6. Home desk
Between work and life, your home desk has likely seen its fair share of clutter. Tidying up papers, office supplies, and whatever else has made its way into your workspace will help make you more productive
7. Fridge
Your fridge can seem like a daunting place to start, but it’s an important one. If it looks particularly overwhelming, spend 15 minutes clearing out your condiments, then move onto another section the next time you set out to declutter.
