Fabulous home fragrances

Fill your home with fab fragrances. There are tons of options to give your home an inviting aroma that will delight both you and your guests. I'm a big fan of tropical, citrus scents like mandarin and grapefruit. These fragrances are light but fresh and invigorating. From left to right, I love the window box home fragrance sachets from Crabtree & Evelyn (left), the grapefruit and pear air enhancer from Method (middle) and the Casa tropical grapefruit soy candle (right).

Suitcases for storage

Simple storage just got a whole lot more stylish! With options like this, who wouldn't want to get things in order? These whimsical, retro-inspired valises might make you want to pack your bags and hop on a plane to gay Paris or something but alas, this little luggage won't quite stand up to the task of international travel. But they will do just nicely, thank you very much, for hiding your mess away, far from view. Store papers or bills or anything else that causes a bit of an unsightly mess around your house. No one will ever guess what's inside; instead, these fancy but functional pieces will just add a dash of colour and a heaping of style to any room. Best of all, they're super affordable!

Available online: pinklovesbrown.com.

Price: Small, $10; Large, $12

Company's comin'

OK, company's coming and you've got a laundry list of things to do, as long as your arm. As if preparing the house isn't enough work, you've got to cook, too! You need a food processor to take the, um, heavy lifting, as it were, out of the process. With a quick and efficient machine by your side, it's like having your own personal sous-chef. OK, not really, but ... close. These Hamilton Beach food processors have powerful motors that chop, slice, shred and puree at lightning quick speed. So put that knife down. Don't spend precious time slicing and dicing when you could be tackling any other of the things on that list of yours!

Shown here: Big Mouth 14 cup Food Processor (left), available at Sears, True Value Hardware and Wal-Mart. Chef Prep 525 Watt Food Processor (right), available at Home Hardware, Personal Edge and The Bay.

Coffee at home

So, imagine this: It's a bitterly cold Saturday morning. You're lying in bed, dreaming about a piping hot cup of coffee but the chill in the air makes it too difficult to leave your cozy cocoon. If it were a weekday, you'd stop off at Starbucks on your way into work but today, it's just too darned cold to think of heading outside. The solution is simpler than you think. With the Tassimo Hot Beverage System, you can brew a perfect cup of your favourite Starbucks coffee right at home, without stepping foot outside. The handy Tassimo discs come in four Starbucks coffee blends: Breakfast blend, House blend, Caffe Verona and Africa Kitamu. Things just got a whole lot more ... convenient.

The Tassimo Hot Beverage System is available at major department stores, mass and selected grocery stores for $199. Starting in December, Starbucks Coffee Tassimo discs are available at retailers nationally and online at tassimo.com ($9.99).

It's officially that time of year! I don't know about you, but I've already received three invitations to Christmas parties and my weekends are booking up fast! If you plan on having friends and family over for a dash of holiday cheer, don't delay. Issue your invitations soon before other hungry hostesses snatch all your friends up. These gorgeous invitations are handy – just print them off at home and address individually. Plus, print off matching menus and place cards to use when guests arrive. Other designs are available but this red ornament theme is ... well, it's my favourite!

Perk up your powder room

As we head into the year's busiest entertaining season, many of us have our thoughts on decorating the house, trimming the tree and, if you're planning on hosting houseguests, preparing guest bedrooms. Don't forget the powder room! Fresh new hand-towels and pretty soaps can really perk up the space. I love this hand-care duo from Fruits and Passion. Perched in a ceramic caddie, this hand cream/hand soap duo (250mL each) comes in three yummy fragrances: Amaryllis, Gui-Mistletoe and Orange-Cinnamon.

Available at: Fruits & Passion stores across Canada or online at fruits-passion.com

Price: $25.00

Christmas recipes

Only 34 days until Christmas! And we all know what that means. Only 34 days left to get the Christmas cards mailed, the house decorated, the baking baked, the presents bought, the tree trimmed and the gifts wrapped. That's not accounting for preparing the big holiday dinner, but I don't want to stress anyone out. The trick, as we all know, is to take it one step at a time, get organized and not leave everything for the last minute. Besides, while we love all of this stuff -- it's not what this wonderful season is all about anyways, now is it? So take a few deep breaths, put on some Christmas music and just relax. How about starting with a few holiday recipes that will not only add the delightful aroma of Christmas baking to your home but will mean that you'll always have something on hand to take as a thoughtful gift when you're visiting friends and family. Or, make some tasty treats ahead of time and freeze them until the season gets into full swing. That's one thing out of the way. My favourite holiday recipes? I'm already drooling over these desserts from Canadian Living's new cookbook, The Complete Christmas Book.

Check these out:
Candy cane cheesecake
Chocolate hazelnut tassies
Nut brittle

For more drool-worthy recipes, visit canadianliving.com or pick up a copy of the book. It's perfect for holiday entertaining and makes a fab gift, too!

Keep your coffee cozy

I love winter until January 2. Once the holidays are over, I've got no use for the biting cold ... even a pretty fresh snowfall that turns the outdoors into a wonderful winter wonderland can't change my mind. But until then, I relish in the holiday spirit and the novelty of the change of seasons. You know ... silver white winters, snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes. Warm woolen mittens. Cozy cashmere sweaters and yummy hot drinks that warm you from the inside out. Take the chill out of the coldest winter day with a piping cup of hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate that somehow, just seems to taste better in a stylish mug. This plaid set from Second Cup is perfect for a hot cuppa and the co-ordinating dessert plate – perfect for all kinds of tasty delights. Need your coffee to go? This travel tumbler, also from Second Cup, is oh-so-cute in its little knitted sweater.

Available at: Second Cup stores across Canada

Price: Holiday plaid coffee cup and dessert plate, $14.95; Travel tumbler with knit sweater, $14.95

Pretty paper

This is only the first week of this blog and already I'm going to choose stationery for a second time. What can I say? I love stationery. Beautiful paper, notebooks, notecards and journals really turn my crank. I'm a writer, so it's no surprise. I recently visited the Papyrus store in Manhattan Beach, California and found myself totally lost amidst the pretty things, reaching my hands out to touch everything, to stroke the silk journal covers and pet the velvet overlay on so many of the cards. And then I was asked to leave. But not before I had stocked up on some new cards (white with a black velvet damask pattern) and a leather-covered journal, which I started using immediately. Now I'm drooling over these colourful caddies, featuring 40 notecards and 40 envelopes.

Available at: papyrusonline.com
Price: $24.95

I wasn't really asked to leave.

Cozy, not cold

Across Canada, there's a chill in the air. It is November, after all. But bundling up to fight off cold winter days needn't be bulky and boring. Dress your bedroom with a reversible silk quilt in any one of five cozy colours. I especially like the 'eucalyptus' colour, shown left.

Available at: Restoration Hardware (selection may vary by store); or order online at restorationhardware.com
Price: $299-$399, depending on size

Get organized

"Out of sight, out of mind."

"A place for everything and everything in its place."

"Don't agonize. Organize."

Whatever your organizational mantra, chanting it while you step over piles of books or rummage through your drawers looking for a sweater amidst your sweet summer things, isn't actually going to help you. You need the right tools.

Not hammers and nails and wrenches and such. You need embroidered boxes, so pretty that no one will ever guess what junk manner of junk lies inside.

You need wicker baskets, simultaneously stylish and serviceable.

And you need trunks. Old-world inspired and distressed for a worn, antique-y look, these trunks are not only perfect for storage, but they can also be used as tabletops in a pinch. Use them singly or stack them for effect, as shown here. Available in Charlotte Blue, Ivy Green and Ming Red.

Available at: Pottery Barn (selection may vary by store)
Price: $199-$499 each, depending on size

Welcome!

When I first decided to start a Style At Home blog, I knew immediately that I wanted it to be a place to showcase pretty things; luxurious, decadent, beautiful, simple, practical but pretty things that would appeal and delight. At first, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to come up with one new, pretty thing to share with you every day. Now, I'm not sure how I'll ever choose which one to showcase each day! There are so many gorgeous things for you and your home out there ... and every day, I'll be picking something new for us too "ooh!" and "aah" over together. While I can't promise raindrops on roses or whiskers on kittens, I do assure you that these will all be some of my favourite things – they may become your favourite things, too!

So today, we're going to start out with something simple but stylish. I love these notebooks from iomoi.com. Just $10 (plus tax and shipping, natch!), these 64-page, colourful journals are perfect for perking up a dull Monday morning meeting or just scrawling your random but riveting thoughts.

Available at: iomoi.com
Price: $10
