The ‘90s are known for a lot of iconic things: dial-up Internet, Tamagotchis, and a distinctly clunky interior design style.

To bring this primary bedroom and ensuite bathroom into the present, designer Kim Charbonneau sought to incorporate a blend of modern style and seamless functionality. The renovation took the space from dull and dated to warm and inviting.

The first task on the designer’s checklist? Getting rid of the awkward-shaped wall dividing the primary and the bathroom. In removing the antiquated double-sided fireplace, Charbonneau was able to devise a spacious walk-in shower that utilized the glass block windows already built into the wall.

“Straightening the wall did decrease the size of the bedroom by a couple of feet, but that space became a full-sized ‘His’ closet,” says Charbonneau, the principal designer and owner of Kim Joy Design. “In the bathroom, it created the room needed for the double vanity.”

To further its airy design, Charbonneau welcomed oversized tiles into the ensuite through bold yet understated “material drenching.”

“We ran the tile up the wall and onto the ceiling of the shower to create a Mediterranean feel and make the space feel more open,” she explains.

An elegant freestanding tub and strategic divider to disguise the toilet were the finishing touches in the bathroom.

Clever design solutions also maximized the space available in the suite. A pocket door to the ensuite tucks into the wall to eliminate the need for a wide-swinging door. Shifting the position of the door allowed the bedroom’s former closet to transform into a linen closet accessible from the hallway.
