A Kitchen Inspired By The French Fashion House Hermès

A mix of materials – including steel uppers inspired by the French fashion house Hermès – thrills in an adventurous kitchen for a family of three.

Artists are known to take risks, so it’s no surprise this spectacular kitchen belongs to a creative. Designer Damon Fox, owner of Toronto’s Devix Kitchens, credits his client – an artist who lives in the newly renovated house with her husband and daughter – for the concept. “She wanted it to look like a high-end English bar, complete with wood and metal cabinets,” says Damon. “I brought that idea to life.” Working over six months, Damon created a room that’s rousingly layered with fun flourishes like mesh-metal steel doors and a royal blue fridge. A confluence of materials, including marble, chrome, walnut and a shimmery stone backsplash, deepens the richly layered space, making this kitchen a chic spot for morning coffee or evening aperitifs.

Fashion District

Expansive windows lure in natural light. Chrome bistro pendants tie into the shiny cabinets. To fulfill the homeowner’s wish to replicate the metal doors used by Hermès, designer Damon Fox went on a hunt: “I found the fabricator who does the store fixtures, and he did them for me,” he says. “They’re fronted in handmade metal mesh with a chevron pattern.”

Bolt of Blue

The homeowner found the dramatic fridge. “Those are actual blue-painted doors,” says Damon, who colour-matched the cabinets above the appliance so both are a seamless unit visually. A butler’s pantry to the right of the wall ovens has bistro-style pendants and Carrara marble counters for continuity with the kitchen proper.

Warming Up

Solid walnut Shaker-style doors on the bottom cabinets were essential to balance – and warm up – the shinier and cooler elements in the space. The rich tone recalls an English pub. Even the drawers, neatly cradling the cutlery, are walnut. The pulls are solid steel with chrome plates.

A Fine Establishment

The unique two-tone wall pantry is framed in walnut with glitzy metal doors (right). Using glass ensures that the homeowner’s collection of dishware is in full view. A wheel turns on the spigot-like faucet – very steampunk! It looks like it’s been lifted from a British pub. Cheers to that.
