When these homeowners finally decided to renovate the kitchen, this young couple carefully dismantled the space, sold it on Craigslist and created one to suit their sleek style, going from dark and traditional to light, bright and modern.

Kitchen: Before

The dark, traditional kitchen in this 1940s Edwardian bungalow "was quite nice, but it just wasn't our style," says homeowner Neal McLennan.

The homeowners opted for IKEA's Sofielund kitchen cabinetry (instead of the contemporary go-to of high-gloss white), which creates a warm, minimalist aesthetic with its grey-toned wook-look flat-panelled doors. "We wanted a modern look, but not harshly modern," says Neal, who's been around the decor block - he's an editor at Style at Home's sister publication Western Living.

Family-friendly space

"In the newly opened up, brighter, more family-friendly space, the TV or music can be on or somebody can be sitting on the sofa reading, and you're still connected to them if you're in the kitchen," says Neal.

Waterfall-edged peninsula

A waterfall-edged peninsula provides extra counter space, serves as a mini breakfast bar and visually divides the kitchen from the family room.

Eye-catching features

The unique cylindrical range hood is an eye-catching feature, while the three-dimensional texture of the ceramic mosaic backsplash tiles lends interest and balances the kitchen's clean-lined elements.

The layout

A wall was torn down between the kitchen and family room, creating an open-concept great room with a family area and wide galley-style eat-in kitchen. A small peninsula, which also serves as a breakfast bar, visually divides the spaces yet preserves openness.

Appliances

Appliances were a big splurge. Hard-working, high-end and unique, they play a large role in the kitchen - especially the cylindrical range hood, which is the room's show-stopping focal point. Panelling the fridge and dishwasher creates a streamlined look.
