Natural Touches Like Wood, Seagrass And Cane Warm Up A Classic White Kitchen

For their new home in the eastern Ontario countryside, designer Candace
Plotz’s clients wanted a kitchen that would stand the test of time. Like the
best country kitchens, it’s big and functional, with plenty of storage, a generous 10-foot-long island and a side pantry. But unlike some all-white kitchens that can feel cool, this one is full of heart, and some of the credit goes to wonderfully textural elements like the range hood, stools and backsplash. “There’s so much warmth and character to this kitchen,” says Candace. “It may be brand new, but all the vintage-y touches and textures make it feel classic.”

The full-size pantry off the kitchen features a cane-front drawer to allow air to circulate around stored vegetables. Timeless touches like beadboard walls and a checkerboard tile floor bring a country flavour. Designer Candace Plotz says balancing modern efficiency with classic touches is the secret to style that lasts.

Tactile elements lend warmth throughout. Above a quartet of stools with comfy woven-seagrass backs, the pendant lights are large enough to give needed illumination, but their slim lines don’t add visual weight. The tone of the wood-clad range hood matches the ceiling beams in the nearby living room, while the marble backsplash tiles offer subtle pattern and sheen.
