Want To Make A White Kitchen Sing? Just Add Colour.
The owner of this Calgary home wanted to fill her kitchen with sunlight while maintaining a sense of her home’s original character and warmth. Designers Aly Velji and Alison Conner responded by opening up the room to the entire main floor of the home, and adding a striking and thoroughly modern twist on the classic white kitchen by painting the island in a fresh cedar-frond green. The result: the kitchen is imbued with a warm, welcoming feeling. “I love how bright and fresh it feels,” says Aly. “By opening up the kitchen this way, it just added so much to the house she loves.”
Fresh-Air Feeling
Details like the white and black tile flooring, with its small cross pattern, define the kitchen area while setting off the distinctive diagonal layout of the home’s original oak flooring. Subtle touches of black – the pendant lights, faucets and drawer pulls – add sharpness; the leather chairs, in a luscious cocoa colour, are a comfy alternative to plain stools.
