5 Quick Fixes For Your Laundry Room
Ready to refresh your laundry room? These simple fixes will transform the chore into something enjoyable.
1. THE PERFECT FIT
To improve your laundry room’s functionality, ensure there’s enough space for ease of movement, especially when carrying a full basket or when the ironing board is unfolded. Doors should open freely without blocking other elements in the room. Accurate measurements are the key to maximizing space without obstructing appliance doors or traffic flow. Leave sufficient clearance between a top-loading washer and the cabinet above, or allow enough room to open front-loading washer and dryer doors fully, so you can empty the machines without bending awkwardly. In a small space, position the machines directly across from the door to the laundry room for efficient loading.
2. Material Matters
Opt for smooth, easy-to-clean materials. Thermoplastic and acrylic are excellent choices for cabinetry, while ceramic and vinyl work best for flooring and walls. By selecting these durable materials, you’ll ensure that water from dripping clothes won’t damage the surfaces. (Avoid using wood and porous stones, as they can absorb moisture.) The ultimate must- have? Underfloor heating, which not only enhances comfort but also accelerates the drying of hanging laundry and helps dehumidify the space. If possible, incorporate a floor drain—an essential feature in case of flooding. Also, consider using a special bathroom-grade paint for added durability.
3. From Messy to marvellous
When it comes to organizing your laundry room and making the most of every inch, storage is essential. Maximize all available space by thinking vertically, installing shelves or cabinet units on the walls and above doors. Rolling baskets are a game changer, effortlessly gliding when it’s time to start a load of laundry. For air-drying clothes, a simple space-saving solution is to install a long curtain rod (or clothesline) under a wall cabinet, complete with hangers. And if you want to minimize your energy usage further, a retractable wall-mounted drying rack is a must. For maximum efficiency, stack two racks, since one is rarely enough. Some drying racks even retract to the ceiling, allowing you to move around the room easily without any obstructions.
4. Style statement
Just because this room is rarely seen doesn’t mean it should be overlooked. Treat it to the same style and attention as the rest of your home. Inject a little personality and vibrancy with a few framed prints, some lush indoor plants, and perhaps a chic wallpaper specially designed for humid spaces. After all, the task of doing laundry will feel less tedious in a space that makes you happy.
5. Light Bright
No window? No problem! Don’t let this hardworking space stay in the dark. Illuminate it with stylish light fixtures—think sleek pendants, elegant wall sconces, even modern fluorescents—to keep the space bright and functional while you take care of your chores.
Bonus Tip:
When air-drying laundry, running a fan nearby can be effective in helping the clothes dry faster by reducing humidity.
