This bright, stylish and organized space keeps laundry in check for a couple of frequent travellers.

Below, seven tips for creating a chic and functional space like this one, and the essentials you need to get the look.

1 Pick the right location. The 100-square-foot laundry room is located on the main level of this Steinbach, Man., home. It’s right at the back entrance, which the homeowners use every day. Since the kitchen is adjacent, the cabinetry and countertop styles and materials are identical in the two spaces.

2 Add a playful touch. The dramatic wallpaper “brings pattern, drama and a touch of fun” to the hardworking room, says designer Jaclyn Peters. “We wanted to make the space playful and inviting, while also building in lots of function and storage.”

3 Have plenty of storage. To create order, plenty of built-in cabinets store cleaning essentials and other household supplies. A small utility sink is a useful addition for tasks like handwashing delicates and removing tough stains.

4 Opening shelving permits extra style. Floating wooden shelves display canisters and baskets, adding more storage as well as warmth and texture to the predominantly grey, black and white room.

5 Go light and bright. Reinforcing the room’s bright clean vibe, a white washer and dryer set looks seamless against the white cabinetry.

6 Add some contrast. The black-framed window complements the black faucet and cabinetry hardware. Keeping the window uncovered invites in loads of natural light and provides a pleasant garden view to look at while completing laundry chores.

7 Add extra touches to make the job easier. The clothing rod is perfect for hanging delicates to dry, so the happy homeowners don’t need to drape clothing over chairs or on a rickety drying rack.
