7 Ways To Maximize Your Small Space

Thoughtful layouts and personality-driven design amp up functionality and style in these 7 spaces.

Mod pods

Divide a room with an attractive feature that ups its style quotient and doubles its functionality. Here, slats of wood serve as an architectural feature that separates a work area from a lounge-like living room. The wood screen lets air and light flow through the entire space, and its peek-through quality ensures that neither “pod” feels claustrophobic. Standout artwork is wall mounted so it adds big personality without taking up floor space.

Smartly designed millwork turns this dining area into a multifunctional hub. The desk area doubles as a daytime workspace and a sideboard for serving during dinner parties, and the integrated table can be used as extra counter space for the nearby kitchen. Ceiling-height glass-door cabinets and base units with drawers provide tons of open and closed storage, and a sleek sliding door hides kitchen mess. Brilliant!

Custom millwork goes to great heights to provide storage and display in this stunning bathroom. The floor-to-ceiling unit has glass doors, which are best suited to those among us who are naturally tidy. Bonus: They keep the look airy and open.

Rarely do apartments have generous entryways, so creativity is key to making the space orderly and welcoming. Wall-mounted drawer units are ideal, providing a tabletop for dropping keys and closed storage for bulkier items. A chair and a pouf (which tucks away under the drawer unit) invite people to sit when changing footwear. The style of furnishings echoes that of the main living area, which is visible as soon as you enter, creating a harmonious, cohesive feel.

Stow away

Fold-down beds are back in a big way, especially in small spaces. The “plus one” phenomenon in so many modern condos usually means an alcove or nook off the main space that’s a challenge to furnish. If you need the nook to serve as a bedroom or guest room, as well as an office, a fold-down bed with integrated storage will maximize the room’s potential. To enlarge the space visually, paint the unit and walls in the same colour.

Dividing line

One-room living, especially in a rental, requires ingenuity. This off-the-shelf shelving unit is a great temporary fix that divides this small apartment into sleeping and dining zones while providing critical vertical storage that doesn’t eat up floor space.

In a small space, leaving room to walk around furnishings and to pass through to different zones is crucial.

A sliding door between the living room and bedroom in this micro condo was replaced with a glass door and window, which make both spaces feel bigger and brighter. The new custom pony wall, added under the window, has storage on both sides and an integrated TV across from the sofa. Black framing highlights the new feature and is echoed in the room’s accents for continuity.
