A series of stand-alone spaces helps this backyard function like an expansive resort.
How do you make a backyard feel like a upscale retreat? Divide and conquer. Designer Kate Davidson, working with International Landscaping, did just that for homeowners in Oakville, Ont., by creating a variety of distinct “rooms.” Some are ideal for entertaining a crowd; others are perfectly scaled for spending time with family. Signature fabrics and furnishings give each space its own character, while the palette unifies the whole and creates the look of a high-end resort.
At the foot of the garden, the cabana is a relaxed place to chill out, warm up by the fire, or linger in the hot tub.
Closer to the house, the covered back patio has a place for dining alfresco and lounging in the shade.
“Rather than going with just one, we used three finishes, five fabrics and three collections to create layers and give each space its own mood.”
Just like indoors, parties always seem to end up in the kitchen. This open-air area features an outdoor cooking and bar zone, with plenty of room for guests to gather. Comfy loungers shaded by sculptural Tucci umbrellas double as poolside seating and an extra perch for barflies.
