When outdoor dining table options didn’t strike gold, Megan decided to go with an indoor one. “The homeowners agreed that it was perfect, and since the dining area is covered, we didn’t have to worry about weather conditions,” she says. After designing the condo’s interior, designer Megan Baker was keen to continue its pale colour scheme outside. “I repeated the principal bedroom’s soft hues on the terrace for easy flow,” she says. “The palette feels serene inside and refreshing outside. And I always use drapery as a way to blur the line between indoors and out.”

“I introduced lots of textures, rough finishes and basket weaves to balance the building’s formal structure with a more casual elegance.”

Artful touches

Breaking the space into different zones was paramount, but not only for practical reasons. “I wanted an area for visual impact use only,” says Megan. “There’s nothing more luxurious than using square footage solely for the enjoyment of art or, in this case, a sculptural urn.” Its grand effect, and the rigid row of cedars behind it, is softened by a scattering of potted plants. “The mix of plants and containers is so specific to a European terrace that it instantly feels like Provence,” she says.

“Greens are my favourite way to complete an outdoor space and create effortless style.”

FINISHING TOUCHES

One of the most inviting aspects of this alfresco space is how it’s styled to be so welcoming. Megan says: “Furniture is only part of the story. Lots of pillows, a pretty vase and a scented candle are important to making the terrace as inviting as the interior. Outdoor living demands little luxuries that invite you to sit down and enjoy the extra space.”

COMFORT ZONE

In the terrace’s living area, a casual woven sofa channels southern French style. “It’s got great scale and its visual weight makes it as comfortable and inviting as a sofa you might find inside,” says Megan. She painted the base of the owners’ marble-top coffee table black to tie it in with the chairs. “The black iron is a nice counterpoint to the woven pieces – it has classic European appeal and is a great bridge between city and country style.”
