6 Things That Make Your Home’s Exterior Look Outdated

Interior design is the name of the game when it comes to your home, but what about the exterior?

While you may have spent plenty of time, energy, and money on your home’s interior, it’s easy to forget about the outside.

Whether you’re thinking about upping your curb appeal for your own enjoyment or to sell your home, these are the dated features to look out for.

1. Flashy front doors

A door may just seem like, well, a door, but some styles look more passé than chic. Builder-grade frames with frosted or ornate windows might have been trendy at one point, but these overly-frilly elements aren’t so in-mode nowadays. Go for a door with more clean lines and bright panelling.

Also, don't forget to freshen up your door's paint job. A fresh hue can make even a boring frame look brand-new.

2. Lighting

Just like inside your home, lighting is an affordable way to update any space. Exterior lighting is not only supposed to be practical and light up your entrance, it should also be stylish.

3. Overly manicured—or overgrown—greenspace

When it comes to your lawn, garden, and planters, there should be a happy medium. If your exterior looks too manicured, it can look sterile and uninviting. On the other hand, overgrown hedges and grass can look messy.

Take care of your property, and strategically place fresh planters and hanging baskets around to breathe life into your exterior.

4. Tired house numbers

Whether your house number is rusted, falling off, or in an outdated cursive font, this simple swap will make your property look trendier. Pick a fresh font that ties into your design style, from simple and minimalist to bold and cool.

5. Poor-fitting shutters

Window treatments add an instant lift to any home, but not if they don’t fit the windows properly. Exterior shutters that don’t align to the size of a window or that are too heavy make your home look dated.

Consider removing them or replace them with a fresh set.

6. Peeling paint

Old, peeling paint is a tell-tale sign of an old home. Giving your house a fresh paint job not only gives you the opportunity to get creative, it will brighten up the bones of your home.
