kelly wearstler for the rug company
Last Friday, I had the honour of interviewing the über-glam designer Kelly Wearstler and the ever charming Christopher Sharp, co-founder of The Rug Company. We met in the morning at the stunning east-end decor store Avenue Road and talked parties, kids, decor, inspiration and, of course, Kelly's new rug designs for The Rug Company.
Check out the rugs and the answers to a few quick questions I asked Kelly and Christopher below. But for the full interview? You'll have to watch for it in an upcoming issue of
Style at Home.
Kelly, on her inspiration: “We did a collection about five years ago, and it was time to have some new carpets in the collection. We were working on new designs for various things – and we had these great paintings that we thought would translate beautifully into carpets.”
Christopher, on working with Kelly: “[The Rug Company] often works with fashion and product designers who are working outside of their medium. So they’d love to design a rug, but it’s not something they’ve had experience with. Or, they’ll be thinking about transferring a design used in a different medium onto a rug. But with Kelly, you know she’s a decorator, so you know you’re in safe hands, and you know it’s going to be great.”
Kelly, on working with Christopher and The Rug Company: "When we do a design and give it to The Rug Company, just their knowledge of weaves and different materials is so great that they really take it to the next level. They have the mindset for what would be the best vehicle for the design, whether it's mixing wool and silk or using a bamboo silk, which is what we did here."
Kelly and Christopher, on the bamboo silk used in the rugs: KW: “It’s the first time they’ve used this particular material on carpets and the texture is a little chunkier as opposed to the other silk, which is more refined.” CS: “Bamboo silk is sustainable, it grows quickly and it’s a wonderful material that’s incredibly, incredibly strong. It kind of looks like silk, but it's not. It’s a third of the price, but the rug is still handmade, so you end up with something that has great value, a great look and great design.
