New Brunswick's capital is known for historic buildings, Victorian architecture, and the pretty St. John River the city sits along. It isn't known for the shopping, but it may soon be. In addition to several shopping malls and complexes, Fredericton's revitalized downtown district is bustling with 16 blocks of unique boutiques and specialty shops. Maybe you're looking for an Asian marble bowl. Maybe you're hunting down the martini shaker or armoire you saw in Style at Home. Whatever your home needs, Fredericton has the answer.

Room 2 Remember (494 Queen St., 506-443-9016) is an urban contemporary decor store where you'll find sought-after items such as Faab draperies and the largest Umbra collection in Fredericton. Co-owner Malcolm Suttie says he searches for the most unique items he can find then does his best to secure exclusivity in the Fredericton market. Room 2 Remember just made a move to a new location in the downtown core, and is in the process of launching a website, complete with online purchasing.

Aitkens Pewter (408 Queen St., 506-453-9474, aitkenspewter.com) is a family-owned pewter oasis that sells everything from bangles and earrings to business card holders, as well as an array of home accent pieces. At the store's downtown location, you'll find table toppers such as modern hand-spun pewter vases and Celtic bowls, or find what you need from their online store. If you're looking for elegant, unique touches, look no further.

Paradise Imports (95 York St., 506-455-1711, nancyjon.com), located in the downtown shopping district, expanded from a small jewellery store to selling exotic furniture and home accents, all imported from Thailand and Bali. You'll find hyacinth furniture, teak screens and hand-carved mirrors, all hand-selected by the owners. Nancy Davidson and Jon Coster, the husband and wife team behind Paradise Imports, work closely with their suppliers. "We use the same families," says Davidson. "If we have a family that makes our pottery, we don't use anyone else." Shop here for unique items that will make a statement in your home.
