Selling your house means a never-ending list of to-dos. It’s a stressful experience for everyone.

If you want to increase your chances of selling, then you might want to  consider changing the colour of your walls, according to a recent study.

Zillow, America’s leading real estate marketplace, studied over 4,700 recent and prospective home buyers across the United States and found that homes with walls painted charcoal grey received higher offers than those painted in bland and neutral colours.

And it didn’t matter what room the dark grey was in—it worked in all areas of the house. One difference, however, came when prospective buyers looked at front doors. The agency notes that midtone greys were less popular than black or warm brown.

Other shades that are popular according to the study include earth tones, especially when used in bathrooms. Homes that had bathrooms painted in 2023’s colour of the year, terracotta, received higher offers.

"Paint is a relatively affordable and easy change, yet it has an outsized impact on a buyer's perception of the home," says Amanda Pendleton, Zillow's home trends expert. So if you’re thinking about selling your home, it might be worth investing some time and money into a painting project; you might be pleasantly surprised with the outcome!
