Each year the Interior Design Show returns to Toronto to highlight the best in global and Canadian design for the home and garden. From inspiring exhibits, designer talks and displays, attendees can learn and see the very best in products and services to make their homes a showcase of style. This year celebrates the Interior Design Show’s 25th anniversary. Contributing Editor Karl Lohnes got an early sneak peek at the show and listed his 5 favourite ‘must-see’ booths that inspired him for the upcoming year in design.

πŸ† Montauk Sofa   β˜ž Booth#1528    

 

Montreal-based luxury sofa and upholstery company. Known for grand, ultra-comfortable modern sofas and chairs that last a lifetime.

Montauk’s booth space is always large and airy- often only displaying one or two large furniture piece upholstered in an inspiring fabric that sets the trend for the next year or two. This year, they created an eighties vibe with large palm leaves and parrot adorned sofas. Think Golden Girls moves to New York City.

Take away: Their upholstery fabrics are always 2-3 years ahead of the design curve. So get ready to be inspired. Sitting on one of the display couches will transform your body into ultra comfort.

Obakki, BC based home décor company that offers sustainable, ethically handmade décor made in partnership with a network of artist from around the world.

Walking into the world of Obakki is a sensory overload. Their use of texture, scent and style is always unique. From large wall-hung rope sculptures to hand-poured scented candles, the handmade, crafted products will give you an entirely new appreciation for the art of handmade design.

Take away: You will leave inspired by the hand-made design and with a whole new appreciation of the world of craft.

Living Lighting is Canada’s largest chain of lighting stores, (mostly located in Ontario). They sell lighting at all prices and their trained lighting experts offer practical, stylish advice with personal service. They carry everything from new energy-efficient light bulbs to $50,000 chandeliers. 

The booth at IDS highlighted some designer inspired lighting that shows that Living Lighting isn’t just about the everyday ceiling fan (although they sell those too). The Euro-style and contemporary lighting will prove that lighting isn’t just for brightening our rooms – its also fashion for the home.

Take away: See the newest light finishes and leave knowing there is a local lighting source near you that has inspired designs to help with your lighting needs.

Miele is the leader in European inspired appliances and has been a favourite appliance supplier for kitchens with smaller footprints as their smaller sized appliances are a favourite of kitchen designers and architects.

Take away: Miele is always introducing new appliances that make life easier in the kitchen. A visit to their booth will inspire you to cook and entertain in a whole new way.
