DIY project: Wintry wall hangings

Style at Home managing editor and resident crafter Catherine Therrien shows you how to update Grandma's doilies to create wintry wall art.

Managing editor and resident crafter Catherine Therrien modernizes your grandmother's doilies by placing them in embroidery hoops. The resulting wall hangings highlight the delicate snowflake like patterns.

Materials

  • Doilies of diffferent sizes
  • Wooden embroidery hoops
  • Scissors

Instructions

1 Select an embroidery hoop that is slightly smaller than your doily, allowing for an approximate 1” overhang.

2 Unscrew the embroidery hoop. Centre the doily on the inner ring. Pulling the doily taut as you go, carefully slide the outer ring onto the inner ring and secure it in place by tightening the screw.

3 Once the screw is fully tightened, cut off the excess doily using sharp scissors. (If there’s any wiggle room, the doily will slip through the ring once you cut off the excess.)
