2013 paint colour trends

Modern neutrals with bold hits of electric blue popped up across palettes from a variety of paint companies for 2013. It’s always interesting to see how the fashion world, international design and popular culture (think: Downton Abbey) influence what we’re going to use to rejuvenate a space.

While neutrals, like soft greys, muted pinks and taupe, can do wonders to freshen up a room, try splashing a hit of colour in an unexpected place, such as a ceiling, inside a bookshelf or on a few cupboards. Here are some fresh picks that will likely make it onto your Pinterest inspiration boards — and maybe your walls — for 2013.

Dulux chose “Inspired Violet” as its main colour for 2013. “It is the deepest colour we’ve ever chosen and although it is a striking statement colour, it is easy to live with, giving rooms a tranquil and restful atmosphere,” says Tina Zappulla, assistant brand manager at Dulux Paints.

Tina recommends pairing this versatile hue with bright colours of a similar shade in bedrooms, family rooms and living areas. Or, be really bold by painting the ceiling or an accent wall.

Benjamin Moore

Each year, the Benjamin Moore colour council travels the world and then carefully selects the palette you will find in stores. Lemon Sorbet is the colour of the year, says Benjamin Moore colour and design expert for French Canada, Sophie Bergeron.

“Everywhere!” says Sophie. “The colour card is a base of inspiration to make it easy for consumers to see the colour palette applied in a room, two different ways. But every palette is adjustable and workable with what the consumer already has in their home.”

The Colour Metric palette came from the fashion world, inspired by the colour-blocking trend. “Even though we've identified these hues as trend colours, they will likely become classics over time,” says Nancy Bollefer, Canadian marketing manager for Behr Paints.

“One approach to injecting this look in your home is to consider painting a focal wall, perhaps at the end of a long narrow hallway, in Plum Orbit, and for contrast, apply Matrix, a very neutral taupe on the surrounding walls,” says Nancy. “Complete the look by leaning a large piece of artwork against the dark plum wall for high impact.”

A patriotic theme ties Beauti-Tone’s 2013 palette together, aptly titled the Simon Chang Oh Canada! Trend Colour Collection. “Beauti-Tone’s trend colours showcase great complex neutrals that work with many other colours to offer a sophisticated yet comforting space,” says creative director Bev Bell. “Fresh new greens add balance to our lives.”

“Optimism is best demonstrated with beautiful pops of colour; hip raspberry, a pop of orange and energetic yellow,” says Bev. “Perfect for a feature wall, furniture or fabulous hits of colour hidden inside drawers, closets or cabinets.”

“These colours will create a homely atmosphere in any room, but try painting kitchen units Stone Blue with the island in Radicchio for a charming scheme,” says Sarah. “French Gray is suited to beautiful bedrooms giving a calming atmosphere, while using Cornforth White on the floor will help illuminate your home by reflecting light onto Hardwick White Walls.”

Sico Paints

Sico’s paint colour trends are developed by adapting observations made by a special team of designers, architects and event sociologists from AkzoNobel (Sico’s parent company), to reflect the Canadian market, explains Sico brand director Mylène Gévry. We love the softness and femininity of the Visual Solace palette. “[It] represents people’s growing appreciation for art and nature as a divergence from our hectic lives,” says Mylène.
