6 Easy Fixes To Optimize Your Storage

With a little effort, storage solutions can be made both functional and beautiful. These six fixes ensure you can have more storage and admire it, too.

1. Double duty

This chic nook doubles as a bench for changing from out- door shoes and a storage spot for clutter, from random kids’ toys to hats and gloves. Bonus: The jaw-droppingly beautiful wallpaper makes this functional corner a stunning feature.

2. Maximum impact

Love. Love. Love. Do you not just adore these clever under-stairs pullout cabinets? Sliding drawers hold overflow items from the kitchen and pantry, as well as a brilliant sliding wine “wall.” This design thoroughly maximizes the functionality of previously wasted space. And when the doors are closed, the cabinets practically disappear, leaving the hallway uncluttered and easy to navigate.

3. Scandi storage

In a rental or a small space, solutions can be limited. This wall-mounted board of unfinished blond wood with the grain beautifully evident is a thing of Scandi style utilitarian beauty. And it’s temporary, requiring no major outlay of cash and minimal disruption. Pegboard-like shelves adjust to changing needs, but be sure not to crowd them: display everyday items judiciously with thought to shape and scale.

4. Big idea

This huge coffee table is a lovely furnishing on its own, but underneath are four poufs that all provide extra seating and storage! A mix of patterns and solids adds visual interest for a fully customized designer touch.

5. Tall tales

This custom bookcase extends to ceiling height at the end of a hall and blends seamlessly into the architecture of the house. Closed cabinets below hide less attractive items. Above, a library sconce provides general hallway illumination while also lighting the collection. While this owner prefers identical book coverings, we think colourful spines would give a different but equally interesting effect.

6. Group therapy

A basic principle of organizing is to group like things together. For collectors, that can be a challenge. “What do you mean, ‘If you love something, let it go?!’” We hear you. Here’s our advice: keep your collections together and orderly, and you’ll appreciate them even more. Here, the extensive glassware collection of a frequent entertainer has a home in a custom cabinet with shelves positioned for the height of the glasses to maximize space. The black interior is stylish and makes the profile of glassware more visible than white would.
