Hotel style: Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort

By: Natalie DiScala
Nestled in Thailand’s northern jungles, the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort is an exotic escape that offers guests rustic yet elegant accommodations, breathtaking vistas of the three countries that comprise the Golden Triangle and unique encounters with the elephants that call this camp home. The word ‘Anantara’ is derived from the ancient Sanskrit word meaning ‘borderless water’ and since water is associated with wealth and good fortune in many Asian cultures, the name is auspicious.

Situated at the meeting point between Thailand, Myanmar and Laos, the aptly named Golden Triangle region of Thailand is as picturesque a spot as visitors could hope for and the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort is the perfect spot to enjoy everything the area has to offer. Always inspired by local architecture and respectful of native cultures, Anantara Resorts offer guests authentic experiences that pay homage to the people and landscape of the region. And the property in the Golden Triangle is no exception.

Lobby

There’s no mistaking where you are when you first step foot into the lobby of the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort. Traditional Thai decorative details abound at every turn. There are copper plaques that pay tribute to goddesses, as well as dragons, etched into the surface. Gently lit by candlelight, the lobby sets the tone for any visitor’s stay in the Golden Triangle and the ambiance created is beautiful, authentic and deeply atmospheric.

Rooms

The rooms at the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort offer sweeping panoramas of the surrounding landscape. Imagine misty morning views that slowly transform into sumptuous sunsets. The property has 77 rooms, 19 of which are suites. Since this is the Golden Triangle, you’ll want to book a room or suite that offers a three-country view of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. Inside the rooms, guests will enjoy the plush and moody decor. Rich Thai silks, teak wood floors and local artwork and carvings exude the aesthetic native to the area, but combine with modern comforts for a truly luxurious experience. The rooms are plenty spacious, as are the balconies, the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy the views, either of the Golden Triangle or the beautiful gardens that grace the resort.

Dining by Design

Dining by Design is exactly what its name suggests: A program that allows guests to design their own dining experience. Whether you prefer to dine on the resort’s lower terrace and take in the views of the Mekong, in the bamboo forests near the resort’s friendly baby elephants or down in the lush rice paddies, the hotel can help you create an experience that’s not only completely unique but that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the region’s gorgeous landscape. Guests can choose from a selection of menus to enjoy the authentic flavours of Thailand in an equally authentic setting.

Elephant Bar

The Elephant Bar is the place to relax, unwind and make new friends while you’re traveling. As seen throughout the rest of the hotel, dark teak woods, etched columns and local carvings are the focal design features, creating an intimate atmosphere, perfect for a lobby bar. Inside the bar is a cozy fireplace that’s kept lit throughout the winter months and an open hearth on the outdoor terrace for chilly evenings. The bar’s expert mixologists concoct creative cocktails nightly and guests can enjoy nibbles before dinner here or full meals as well.

Elephant Camp

The elephant camp at Anantara is responsible for the rescue of 25 elephants from the streets of Thailand, since its inception in 2003. With a deep commitment to and a strong focus on elephant conservation, Anantara’s charity, the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF), funds care for the animals and research projects. The King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, sponsored by Anantara and held annually, raises funds to help provide medical care for elephants and keep them off the streets.
