Hotel style: Sandals LaSource Grenada

The newest member of the Sandals family, Sandals LaSource Grenada opened in December 2013. The sprawling "Spice Island" property encompasses the easy-breezy feel one comes to expect from a visit to the Caribbean, as well as a high level of luxury and style. There are three different villages to choose from: Pink Gin, Italian, and South Seas, each offering their own unique charm. The biggest draw for many visitors: an intimate feel despite the magnitude of the property, which manages to exude equal parts warmth and professionalism. "The guests' first impression upon seeing the hotel is that it is big, but what is so amazing is that once you are on the grounds, the property immediately gives that small hotel residential ambience," says general manager of Sandals LaSource, Peter Fraser. He attributes this warmth and intimacy to the already growing number of repeat visitors.

Chic but comfortable rooms

As comfortable as you want to be in a hotel room, you also want it to feel like an escape from the everyday. The rooms and suites at Sandals LaSource manage to easily straddle the line between chic and comfortable. Peter explains that a signature blue was used throughout the resort as a gesture to the hue that is CEO Adam Stewart’s favourite colour. Lively art and warm wood tones were then added to give the rooms a more Caribbean feel. “The objective was to create a chic island style with casual fabrics, comfortable spaces and top of the line bathrooms, while at the same time keeping it simple, sexy and sophisticated.”

The Living Room

One of the best parts of any resort is a common space that brings people together and allows for quiet relaxation, ideally with drink in hand. At Sandals LaSource that space is the Living Room. The stylish space was part of the original LaSource (Sandals took over and extensively renovated and added to an existing property), which they decided to keep. “It is a great piece of architecture with its high vaulted ceiling, spacious, with natural ventilation throughout the year creating a setting for cozy, comfortable contentment,” Peter explains.

Skypool suites

Imagine being able to step out of your tastefully decorated bedroom, into your own private infinity pool – that’s exactly what you can do in one of the property’s coveted Skypool suites. Peter explains that Sandals’ chairman asked for the pools to cantilever out of the building, which formed the conceptual basis for the design. “This created a suite where you could not tell if you were inside or outside,” he adds. “Fundamental to the finish was natural sunlight and high end furniture on the patio, so you never realize the threshold between the interior and exterior.”

Spa-like bathrooms in Rondoval Suites

Bathroom design should never be secondary and at Sandals LaSource, it isn’t. The luxe bathrooms in the property’s Rondoval suites (named for their rounded design) are particularly eye-catching. “Our designer Sarah Hartman removed walls from the plan and instead used furniture to divide, which is warmer and less obtrusive,” says Peter of the fluid, spa-like feel. “Likewise, the glass walls for the washroom and shower area create natural light blending into the room.” The use of natural materials also helps to create a soothing feel, and the piece de resistance, a round, oversize natural stone bathtub, accentuates the overall look.

Pin Gin pool

As if an infinity edge, unique shape and perfect location at the center of the resort wasn’t enough, the main pool for the Pink Gin Village also boasts its very own fire pits, a feature that gives the pool and surrounding area a sense of elegance as well as intrigue. “It comes alive at night and when you stand in the lobby area and look across the courtyard with the fire pits on either side and those on the beach, it’s sheer theatre,” Peter says. Not to worry though, they only get lit once the sun goes down so there’s no worry of swimming amidst the flames.
